Portside Perspective |
"The food, the people, the ocean breeze—Puerto Morelos is a symphony for the senses, a true taste of the Yucatán." |
Insider Tip: Banderitas 🇲🇽 |
When September rolls around, you'll start seeing children and sometimes entire families on street corners or near the main square, selling banderitas (small Mexican flags), colorful ribbons, and noisemakers.
Plus, waving your own little flag during El Grito on September 15th makes you feel like a true local! |
Local Matters |
Every September, Puerto Morelos celebrates Mexico’s Independence with a dish as colorful as the flag itself: Chiles en Nogada.
Born in Puebla in the 1800s, this recipe combines roasted poblano peppers filled with meat and fruit, topped with a creamy walnut sauce and ruby red pomegranate seeds.
The flavors are as symbolic as they are delicious, representing patriotism on a plate.
Though it’s only available briefly, several beloved local restaurants bring it back each year. El Campanario offers a truly traditional version, while El Pirata mixes in its casual Puerto Morelos charm.
At La Perla Negra, you’ll find a balanced take with a welcoming atmosphere. And in Lola y Moya, the rich family-style recipe makes it feel like you’re eating in someone’s home.
If you’re in town for Independence Day, don’t miss this once-a-year food tradition that unites history, pride, and flavor.
