Insider Tip: Check the Flag |
Check the Flag Before Any Boat Tour
This is a crucial tip, especially with the Norte winds this time of year...
Before you pay for any snorkeling or fishing trip, walk to the pier and look at the small triangle shaped flag at the corner of the 'el muelle' the main pier just off the town square.
If it's green, you're good to go. Yellow means caution (it might be choppy). Blue means rough seas and wind. If it's red, the port is closed, and no boats are going out.
Red days are time for cenotes, maya ruins, or having a tasty beverage at one of the local beach bars. |

Panucho, the beloved street dog sometimes referred to as Puerto Morelos' unofficial mascot or honorary mayor, is recovering from heartworm disease after a frightening collapse at the Local Cafe.
The community quickly organized to raise funds for his treatment when his family couldn't afford the veterinary care.
Within days, Puerto Morelos locals had donated over 9,000 pesos to cover medications, testing, and special food through Pet Lovers veterinary clinic.
The outpouring of support demonstrates how much this friendly dog means to the town.
Panucho is now under doctor's orders to rest, so he will be staying at home while undergoing treatment for the mosquito borne parasitic infection.
So while we won't be seeing our furry friend out and about while he recovers, we look forward to seeing him again in full health soon. Read More... |
Mexico's Musical Treasure
Every January 21st, Mexico celebrates Mariachi Day, honoring one of the country's most beloved musical traditions.
Mariachi is more than just entertainment. It's the sound of Mexico's history, culture, and spirit.
From Jalisco to the World
Mariachi music began in the 18th and 19th centuries in western Mexico, especially in Jalisco state.
It started as the music of farmers and workers, blending indigenous sounds, Spanish string instruments, and African rhythms. Over time, it grew into a powerful symbol of Mexican identity.
The Look and Sound
Mariachi bands are instantly recognizable in their elaborate charro suits, decorated with silver or gold and topped with wide-brimmed hats.
The music is just as distinctive, featuring violins, trumpets, the high-pitched vihuela, and the deep-toned guitarrón that gives mariachi its passionate, booming sound.
A Living Heritage
In 2011, UNESCO designated mariachi as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Today, you'll hear it at weddings, birthdays, and celebrations throughout Mexico, a living reminder of the country's pride and rich traditions. Read More... |
The beautiful beaches in Puerto Morelos are shrinking, but a major rescue plan is on the way. Officials say this town has the worst coastal erosion in the region.
A Big Fix for the Coast
The state of Quintana Roo wants to fix over 33 kilometers of shoreline. This plan includes Puerto Morelos, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Cozumel.
Puerto Morelos is set to receive about seven kilometers of new sand. Leaders hope to get federal approval to start the work by early 2026.
Years of building too close to the water have damaged the coast. New guidelines will help ensure the restoration lasts and protects local businesses.
Saving the Environment
Some experts worry the project could harm the nearby coral reef. The reef is already struggling because of over-fishing and sargassum.
Critics say the plan relies on old data from 2009. They believe new issues like the huge influx of sargassum seaweed must be studied more closely.
Fixing these beaches will be very expensive, costing millions of dollars. The goal is to save the tourism economy while keeping the ocean healthy. Read More... |

I’m healthy, vaccinated, neutered, and more than ready to start my next chapter. I’m one of those grateful dogs who truly appreciates love, companionship, and having a place to call home.
