Insider Tip: Mamey Fruit |
Look for a unique, brown, football-shaped fruit at the local fruit stands called Mamey. It's eaten fresh, with ice creams, or desserts, but avoid the bitter seed and skin.
The flesh is a beautiful salmon color with a creamy texture that tastes like a mix of sweet potato, pumpkin, and cherry. It’s delicious in smoothies (licuados) and is in season this time of year. |

Get ready to bundle up! Puerto Morelos is facing a rare chilly weekend as a powerful blast of Arctic air moves through the region.
A Big Temperature Drop
Cold front number 32 is bringing temperatures much lower than what locals usually expect. While it is normally warm this time of year, some nearby areas have already seen lows dip down to 57 degrees.
A new surge of frigid air will arrive Friday night, making things even colder. This will bring very strong winds and heavy rain to the coast throughout the weekend.
How to Stay Prepared
Families should have jackets and sweaters ready for the cold mornings. It is also smart to keep pets indoors and secure any loose items around the house that might blow away.
Strong winds could cause power outages, so make sure you have flashlights and extra batteries ready. Heavy waves are also expected along the beach on Saturday and Sunday.
By Monday, the cold front will move away toward the Caribbean Sea. While mornings will stay crisp, the warm tropical weather should return to normal by next week. Read More... |

Puerto Morelos is seeing a brown wave earlier than expected this year. This smelly sargassum seaweed is washing up on the shore months before its usual season begins.
Cleaning the Coastline
This early arrival is caused by shifting ocean currents and winds. The Mexican Navy has already removed about 178 tons of seaweed from Quintana Roo beaches this month.
Local beach clubs and hotels are hiring extra staff to help with the mess. These teams work hard at sunrise to make the sand look beautiful for visitors.
Many groups are working together to keep the water clear. They use floating barriers and heavy machinery to pick up the piles of plants.
Protecting Public Health
Rotting seaweed can release gases that cause itchy eyes or sore throats. It also contains harmful chemicals that can sink into the local drinking water if not moved quickly.
Local businesses are finding creative ways to use the seaweed for good. Some people are even turning the collected plants into compost or handmade products.
You can keep up on current conditions by checking the Sargassum Monitoring Forecast before planning your beach trip.
Most beaches are cleanest during the late morning hours after the crews finish their daily work. Read More... |
