Local News |
Puerto Morelos is famous for its blue water and white sand. Now, a new federal program is giving everyone a chance to help save these beautiful beaches.
How Adopting a Beach Works
Mexico’s environmental agency, Semarnat, created a plan called "Adopt a Beach." Local businesses and groups can now pick a specific spot on the coast to look after and maintain.
The groups must promise to keep their area clean and free of trash for a set time. This simple act helps protect the local plants and animals that live near the water.
It is a great way for neighbors to work together for a good cause. Many different groups, like dive shops and schools, are invited to sign up and help.
Helping the Reef and the Town
Puerto Morelos is right next to the second-largest coral reef in the world. Keeping the sand clean ensures that plastic and waste do not float out and harm the delicate reef.
Clean beaches also help the local economy stay strong. When the coast looks its best, more travelers want to visit the area’s hotels and restaurants.
To get started, interested groups can email the government at adoptaunaplaya@semarnat.gob.mx. It is a low-cost way to make a huge difference for the environment. Read More... |
Every spring, one of the most breathtaking astronomical events in the world unfolds just three hours from Puerto Morelos, and it has been happening for over a thousand years.
A Sacred Moment for the Maya
For the ancient Maya, the spring equinox was not simply a change of seasons. It marked the start of the agricultural cycle, a time of spiritual renewal, and a direct communication between the gods and humanity.
A Pyramid Built for the Sky
The iconic El Castillo pyramid at Chichen Itza was engineered with extraordinary precision to capture this exact moment.
As the afternoon sun strikes the structure, it casts a dramatic shadow down the staircase... a phenomenon visible for several days around March 20th.
Plan Your Visit
Chichen Itza is roughly a 2.5 to 3-hour drive from Puerto Morelos. General admission runs approximately 648 MXN, and arriving early is essential as tens of thousands of visitors attend each year.

Puerto Morelos is getting ready for the return of sargazo (sargassum) seaweed. Experts say the 2026 season will look a lot like last year, bringing huge piles of brown plants to the Caribbean shore.
Health and Wildlife Trouble
Sargazo is more than just a messy beach. When the seaweed rots, it releases a gas that smells like rotten eggs. This can make breathing harder for people with respiratory issues.
The seaweed also hurts the ocean ecosystem. It blocks the sunlight that coral reefs and sea turtles need to survive. It can also damage local mangroves and underwater seagrass.
The Plan for Success
City crews will work hard to clean the most popular tourist beaches first. Mexico now calls sargazo a "national fishing resource." This means the country is looking for ways to reuse the seaweed instead of just throwing it away.
Residents can expect to see more cleanup activity soon. Neighbors and local businesses are also teaming up to help. You can join community cleanup events to help keep the beaches beautiful all season long. Read More... |
