Insider Tip: Barracuda |
While you can get it year-round, March is a great month for fresh Barracuda, because of seasonal conditions and fish behavior. Don’t be intimidated by its toothy grin; the flaky white meat is delicious.
Many beachfront restaurants will grill it whole for you, often seasoned with just garlic, lime, and salt. Ask your server for the “pesca del día” (catch of the day) and if it’s barracuda, order it! |

Bright pink feathers are filling the sky in Mexico right now. Thousands of flamingos have returned to the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve for their migration season.
A Bird Lover’s Paradise
Ría Lagartos is the most important place in the world for these flamingos to nest. About 80 percent of the population comes here to raise their young.
The reserve is also home to over 400 other bird species. You can spot everything from pelicans to ospreys in the unique saltwater environment.
How to See the Birds
The park is about a four-hour drive from Puerto Morelos. It is best to arrive early in the morning when the birds are active and the light is great for photos.
Local guides offer boat tours for 800 to 1,500 pesos. Paying for a tour helps the community protect the birds and keep the park clean.
This trip is a long day of travel, but the views are unforgettable. It is a rare chance to see one of nature's most beautiful events up close. Read More... |
Puerto Morelos streets are getting safer thanks to a big upgrade for the local police department.
New Tech and Faster Response
Governor Mara Lezama and Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz recently added 15 new patrol cars to the force. These vehicles cost 16 million pesos and use the latest technology to help the community.
Each car is equipped with four security cameras and GPS tracking to keep everyone safe. These new vehicles will help officers respond to emergencies 30 to 40 percent faster than before.
Having these new units means that 90 percent of the police fleet will be on the road at all times. This provides constant protection for the 71,000 residents of the municipality.
A Growing Fleet
The police department now has 54 patrol cars in total to monitor the area. This number actually beats the city’s original goal of having 50 vehicles ready for service.
The cars will cover many different spots, including local neighborhoods, popular beaches, and the busy highway. This is important because the town sits between the major tourist hubs of Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
Government leaders want every family to feel at peace when they leave their homes. With more patrol cars on the road, help is now just a few minutes away. Read More... |
Imagine finding a crocodile in your backyard or a snake at your front door. In Puerto Morelos, these wild encounters are happening more often as the town grows.
Why Animals Are Moving In
Local firefighters are busy rescuing crocodiles, snakes, and lizards from homes and busy streets. They carefully move these animals back to safe areas in the wild.
New construction is the main reason for these visits. When builders clear the jungle for new homes, the animals lose their natural places to live and hunt.
These cleared areas were once pathways for wildlife to move and find water. Now, those paths lead animals directly into residential neighborhoods.
How to Stay Safe
If a wild neighbor visits your home, do not try to touch it. Even small crocodiles or snakes can be very dangerous or venomous.
Call the local fire department immediately for help. Their trained teams know how to handle and relocate wildlife without anyone getting hurt.
Keep children and pets away from tall grass and water where animals might hide. Learning to share space with nature is part of life in this beautiful area. Read More... |
Sargassum Report |
Puerto Morelos is bracing for a massive wave of smelly seaweed in 2026. City leaders aren’t waiting to see how bad it gets; they are starting now to save their famous white-sand beaches.
Working Together to Fight Seaweed
The city is teaming up with the Mexican Navy and local hotels to tackle the seaweed problem together. Mayor Tziu Muñoz says unity is the only way to protect tourism, which is the city's main source of money.
Starting in March, workers will install long floating barriers out in the ocean. These walls will trap the seaweed in shallow water so it can be picked up before it hits the sand and starts to rot.
Fast Cleanup and Recycling
The Navy is bringing in heavy machines, including a special vehicle that works on both land and water. Removing the seaweed quickly is the main goal because it prevents the "rotten egg" smell that drives visitors away.
Once gathered, the seaweed will be sent to a brand-new industrial park to be turned into useful products. This plan also helps keep the nearby Puerto Morelos Reef National Park healthy and clean.
By acting early, officials hope to keep the water clear for everyone. Residents and visitors are glad to see the city taking such a fast and organized approach. Read More... |
Adoptable Furry Friend |
Hi, I’m Milo 🐾
On March 1st I was found running around near Diving Bar with my collar and leash still attached. I guess I was on quite the adventure, but no one could find my family.
Now I am safe and getting lots of love while I wait for my forever home.
I am about 5 years old, already neutered, and a very sweet boy. I am doing socialization training and learning to be my very best self.
I really try hard because I just want to belong to someone again. I love kind voices, gentle pets, and being close to my people.
Right now I have a temporary foster family, but they will be traveling in a few weeks. That means I really need a home soon. I promise to give you loyalty, love, and a happy wag every single day ❤️
Could you be the one I have been waiting for?
