Insider Tip |
Sea Turtle Nesting Season Begins May marks the official start of the sea turtle nesting season. Female turtles will begin coming ashore at night to lay their eggs.
If you are walking the beach at night, keep your distance, and never use flash photography or shine a light at them because it disorients them. |

Sea Turtles Are Making a Big Comeback in Puerto Morelos
Every spring, ancient sea turtles return to the same beaches where they were born. And the numbers show their comeback is stronger than ever.
Remarkable Numbers
In 2025, over 142,000 sea turtle hatchlings were released across Quintana Roo. Puerto Morelos is one of the only places in Mexico where four different turtle species come to nest.
Green turtles, loggerheads, hawksbills, and leatherbacks all arrive between May and November. That makes this stretch of coastline truly special.
A Community Effort
Local volunteers, federal agencies, hotels, and students all work together to protect the nests. Conservation teams even use a high-tech platform called EarthRanger to track nests and respond quickly to threats like poaching.
Since 1996, the regional program has released over 20 million hatchlings into the sea.
How You Can Help
If you spot a turtle on the beach at night, stay quiet and keep your distance. Turn off any lights facing the water, since artificial lights can confuse both nesting females and baby hatchlings.
Sea turtles have swum Earth's oceans for over 100 million years. A little care from all of us helps keep them coming back. Read More... |
Ice Skating Comes to Cancun
Mexico's national ice skating championship has arrived in the last place you might expect... the Caribbean coast. Cancun is hosting the 39th National Ice Skating Championship from May 18 to 24 at Happy Arena inside Plaza Outlet.
The Competition
Around 400 skaters from across Mexico are competing in the event. Star skater Donovan Carrillo, a two-time Olympian and Mexico's top figure skater, is the biggest name on the ice.
Close to Home
The arena sits right on the Cancun-Puerto Morelos highway, just a 20-minute drive from Puerto Morelos. It is one of the most accessible national sporting events this area has ever seen.
Free and Easy
The best part? Admission is completely free. Events run daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through May 24, and parking at Plaza Outlet is simple.
This is a rare chance to watch world-class athletes compete right in your backyard. It is definitely worth the short drive up the highway. Read More... |
Hundreds of illegal real estate developments have popped up across Quintana Roo, and Puerto Morelos is right in the middle of it. State authorities found 400 irregular projects in just the past year alone.
Why It's Happening
Developers are moving fast to cash in on the booming demand for property. Some skip permits entirely or build in protected areas near cenotes and jungle.
How to Protect Yourself
Always use a licensed real estate agent and hire a Notario Público early, not just at closing. Ask to see all permits before you sign anything, and if a developer hesitates, walk away.
Check Before You Buy
The good news is that the state agency Sedetus makes it easy to check if a development is flagged. A quick search through their official channels could save you from a very costly mistake.
Puerto Morelos is worth protecting your investment in. A little research now can save you from a big problem later. Read More... |
Sargassum Report |
Tiny Creatures, Big Warning
Scientists are using a high-tech tool to study how sargassum is hurting ocean life near Puerto Morelos. The results are eye-opening.
What They Found
Researchers collected water and sand samples to search for microscopic worms called nematodes. These tiny creatures live on the seafloor and help keep the whole food chain healthy.
Beaches covered in sargassum had about half as many nematode species as clean beaches. That is a huge drop, and it means the ecosystem is struggling even when the beach looks fine.
Why It Matters
Rotting sargassum removes oxygen from the water and releases a toxic gas. That kills off the small creatures that fish, reefs, and clean water all depend on.
Puerto Morelos works hard to remove sargassum, collecting around 30 tons per day during peak season. But scientists say the damage can happen faster than cleanup crews can keep up.
The Big Picture
The study also found exotic species arriving with the sargassum, creatures never seen here before. For a town built around fishing and diving, that is a warning worth taking seriously. Read More... |
