Trivia Question❓Unlike the "floating" date in many other countries, on what specific day is Mother's Day (Día de las Madres) always celebrated in Mexico? Answer at the bottom of the newsletter |
|
This week the beach has been almost completely free of sargassum, with clear blue water stretching right up to the shoreline instead of the brown tint near the sand. If you’ve been waiting for one of those perfect beach weeks, this is it.
We highly recommend taking advantage of the conditions while they last. Head down for a swim, grab your snorkel gear, or make your way out to Ojo de Agua where the water has been especially inviting this week.
And honestly, this might be the best part of May in Puerto Morelos. The snowbirds have already flown north for the season, but the summer vacation crowds have not arrived yet. The town feels calmer, quieter, and more relaxed again.
Take a morning walk south of the pier one day this week, and you may find yourself with an entire stretch of beach almost completely to yourself. Enjoy the 'tranquilo' vibe while it lasts. |

The "Norte" Winds are Gone
The chilly winter "Norte" winds are finished by May. This means the ocean is generally much calmer and flatter, making it the best time of year for paddleboarding, kayaking, and taking small boats out to the reef for snorkeling. |

Puerto Morelos Gets a Power Boost
Good news for anyone tired of losing electricity on a hot summer day. Mexico's Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) just switched on new power substations near Cancun, and the benefits reach all the way to Puerto Morelos.
What Happened
Over the weekend of April 19, CFE turned on new substations in the Cancun area. The upgrades are designed to improve power quality for over 700,000 electrical users across the region.
Why It Matters
Puerto Morelos sits between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, two fast-growing areas that put a lot of strain on the local power grid. These new substations help take some of that pressure off.
The Bigger Picture
This is part of an $8.1 billion project by the Mexican government to improve electricity across the country. CFE also recently upgraded seven substations in northern Quintana Roo to get ready for the busy, hot summer months ahead.
Outages may still happen, but the trend is clear... CFE is investing heavily in this region. That is good news for everyone who calls Puerto Morelos home. Read More... |
If you have a Mexican cell phone, big changes are coming soon. A new law requires you to link your phone number to your legal ID to keep your service active.
This applies to full service SIM cards and also temporary eSIMs. It doesn't matter if it's been your number for years or only for a week long visit, you have to register.
Why the Law Matters
Mexico wants to stop criminals from using secret phone numbers for scams. By June 30, 2026, every local phone line must be registered to a real person.
This rule only applies to Mexican carriers like Telcel or AT&T. If you use a U.S. or Canadian phone that is roaming, you do not need to worry.
Starting July 1, unregistered phones will stop working. You will only be able to call 911 or your phone company for help.
How to Register
To register, you need a valid ID like a passport or a Mexican residency card. Your phone company will send you weekly text messages with instructions on how to sign up.
You can register online or visit a store in person. If your phone is stolen, you must report it fast to keep your identity safe.
Don't wait until the last minute to get this done. Registering early will help you avoid the rush and keep your phone working. Read More... |
Sargassum Report |
For years, stinky brown seaweed has been ruining beach days and hurting businesses in Mexico. Now, a new factory in Yucatán is turning that smelly problem into something useful.
Making Seaweed Useful
Huge piles of seaweed, called sargassum, often cover the sand and drive tourists away from the coast. This new facility processes the seaweed to create biofertilizers and food for animals.
Scientists spent eight years researching how to make this work before the plant opened its doors. The goal is to make sure the seaweed is handled in a way that helps the environment and the local economy.
Helping Local Towns
This is great news for towns like Puerto Morelos that spend a lot of money and time cleaning up beaches. If the seaweed becomes a product, it turns a big expense into a real business opportunity.
While the plant is still new and needs more testing, the future looks bright. Instead of just losing money to the mess, coastal towns might finally see a return on their hard work. This shift could help protect the reef and the local tourism season for years to come. Read More... |
