Wow, Puerto Morelos was buzzing last weekend! Hundreds of trick-or-treaters filled restaurant row on Halloween, with costumes everywhere and plenty of candy making the rounds. Restaurants joined in, and so did diners, handing out treats to the kids as they passed.
Then came two beautiful days of Janal Pixán. Ofrendas, or altars, lined up beside the cultural museum, each reflecting the traditions of a different Mexican state.
We’re also seeing more visitors arrive and hearing a mix of languages while out around town. After a very slow summer, it’s good to see a little more bustle and a welcome boost for local businesses.
There’s plenty to keep that energy going this week, from live music and circus performances to Chef Umberto’s speakeasy dinner. Inside, we’ve also got the latest on the proposed beach club, medical tourism, Visitax and beach conditions.
Thanks for reading, and see you out on the town! 😎 |

Puerto Morelos is getting a venue named Club 8, yet developers must follow very strict environmental rules before building.
Building Green on the Coast
Mexico's environmental agency gave conditional approval for the project along the town's central beach area. To keep the sand healthy, the club will sit on raised posts instead of a solid concrete base.
The venue is right inside a protected national reef park, so marine life must stay safe. Because of this, 80 percent of the lot must remain completely free of permanent construction.
Protecting Turtles and Restoring Dunes
Special lighting rules will protect nesting sea turtles and their babies from getting confused at night. The club must also follow strict plans to clear beach furniture and clean up ocean trash.
In addition, the developers must restore 108 square meters of coastal dunes using native plants. If they follow every rule, the town can grow its tourism while keeping the wild coast safe. Read More... |
More travelers are packing doctor notes instead of sunscreen for their trips to Mexico. While traditional beach vacations are dropping, medical tourism is booming across the Mexican Caribbean.
Big Care at Lower Costs
Many patients visit Quintana Roo to get top-quality care at a fraction of the normal price. Some procedures can cost up to 80 percent less than similar care in the United States.
Services now extend far beyond simple dental work and cosmetic surgeries to include orthopedic care. These visitors rarely care about seaweed on the beach, because their main focus is getting well.
Helping the Local Economy
Medical tourists stay an average of 11 days or more, which is much longer than typical vacationers. They also bring family members who spend money on local hotels, food, and transportation.
Proposed healthcare developments along the Cancún to Playa del Carmen corridor could help serve these visitors. This healthcare boom brings reliable income to local workers during every month of the year. Read More... |
Heading home from a sunny Mexican vacation should not end with an expensive surprise at the airport. Many travelers leaving Cancun recently faced extra high fees when trying to pay a required local tourist tax.
Shocking Airport Fees
Foreign visitors leaving Quintana Roo must pay a state tourist fee called Visitax. The state announced a 285-peso rate for 2026, but some airport payment booths asked travelers for as much as 550 pesos.
Angry passengers posted videos online after feeling trapped by the sudden price hikes right before boarding their flights. Authorities were reviewing possible added charges and exchange-rate differences.
Officials Step In
State leaders quickly launched an investigation into the airport payment system after complaints went viral online. Authorities shut down several problematic payment booths to protect departing travelers from unfair charges.
Governor Mara Lezama explained that foreign tourists still need to pay the official tax before leaving. Travelers can pay directly at www.visitax.gob.mx, review the amount before paying, and save their receipt and QR code. Read More... |
Sargassum Report |
Great news for vacationers heading to Mexico this winter! The crystal-blue waters and white sands in northern Quintana Roo are finally clearing up just in time for the busy holiday season.
Clearer Waters in the North
A new state report shows that 86 out of 140 monitored beaches have very low or zero seaweed. Popular northern travel spots like Puerto Morelos and Cancun are enjoying much cleaner coastlines, giving snorkelers and tour boats a great start to the month.
However, conditions are not the same everywhere along the coast. Nine southern beaches still face red alerts for heavy seaweed, and cleanup crews are working long hours to haul it away.
Navy Defenses and Travel Tips
To protect local shores, the Mexican Navy is expanding its open-water cleanups. An announced expansion includes 15 new vessels and additional barriers to intercept seaweed before it reaches the sand.
Because shifting winds and tides can push seaweed ashore quickly, visitors need to stay alert. Officials suggest checking daily sargassum monitoring reports before packing your sunscreen and heading out. Read More... |
