Your Weekly Window Into Paradise Friday October 2, 2026 |
|
Puerto Morelos is waking from its annual September slumber, and it’s good to see familiar doors opening again.
First, congratulations to Lola y Moya, one of our favorite restaurants, on its 10th anniversary! Here’s to many more years of good food and success.
La Sirena is back with live music seven days a week, salsa classes, happy hours, open mic night and the famous Tequila University. El Refugio reopened Thursday, John Gray’s returns October 5, and popular newcomer Lonchería Sandro will reopen this month too.
There’s plenty ahead: the annual Caribbean Grill Festival, Halloween, and Janal Pixan, the Maya and Mexican celebration of loved ones who have passed, with our fishing village’s own Mar de Almas boat parade.
This week, start with our picks for circus in the square, an afternoon with Astrid Consentimiento and roots reggae at La Sirena.
If you’re in town, get out and support your favorite local bars and restaurants. It was a tough low season, and a meal, a drink or a night of music helps welcome them back. |
This Week’s Insider Picks |
1. 🎪 Imagine Circus
The town square gets a little circus magic this Saturday, with acrobatics, live music, dance and theatrical performances coming together for an evening under the stars.
Imagine Circus is a family-friendly show, but you don’t need to bring children to enjoy it. If you fancy something different from the usual dinner-and-drinks plan, this is a free night of live entertainment right in the heart of town.
Date: Saturday, October 3 Time: 7:30 p.m. Location: Parque Fundadores, Puerto Morelos Admission: Free
A Saturday afternoon by the sea is a good setting to get to know a local artist. Astrid brings Latin pop with folk roots and spiritually inspired songwriting to Diving Bar, with influences ranging from Chilean cumbia to afrobeat and reggaetón.
Her music blends electronic beats with acoustic guitar and Andean instruments such as the quena. Settle in for something a little different from the usual cover-band set, with happy-hour drink prices during the performance.
Date: Saturday, October 3 Time: 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Location: Diving Bar, Puerto Morelos Admission: Free; drinks extra
3. 🌴 Xibalba Roots Reggae
La Sirena’s first week back wraps up with a sound that feels right at home in Puerto Morelos. Local band Xibalba Roots Reggae brings steady basslines, rhythmic guitars and an easy Caribbean groove to Thursday night.
Expect uplifting roots reggae with a full-band sound, a good excuse to get up and dance or simply settle in and enjoy the music. It’s a relaxed way to spend an evening with friends now that La Sirena is open again.
Date: Thursday, October 8 Time: 8:00 p.m. Location: La Sirena, Puerto Morelos Admission: Free

Insider Tip: Mangrove Birds |
On your next morning walk, slow down near the mangroves and look into the branches. October brings migrating warblers, known locally as chipes, through the region, joining the birds that call this habitat home.

Born in Madrid in 1945, Alfredo Lanz has worked across painting, sculpture, jewelry and photography. Since moving to Puerto Morelos in 2012, the town’s natural surroundings have taken his art in a new direction.
Nature Becomes Art
His current exhibition, Entre Cortezas y Pensamientos, translates roughly as “Between Bark and Thoughts.” It explores the roots, bark, mangroves and organic forms familiar to anyone who spends time here.
In his Manglares series, Lanz combines wood, bark, roots, stucco, pigments and oil, sometimes incorporating materials found on the forest floor. The resulting textures blur the line between painting and sculpture.
Art Rooted in Our Community
His local work also includes the Santuario de la Paz, created at the Jardín Botánico Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marín in 2023. The cultural centre hosted his Manglares exhibition in 2024.
Plan Your Visit
See the current exhibition at the Centro Cultural y Museo de Puerto Morelos through October 22, 2026, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission is free. Closed Saturday and Sunday. Read More... |
If you're planning a winter trip to Puerto Morelos, get ready to pay more. Hotels in the region are pushing for rate increases of 25 to 35 percent this season.
Why Are Prices Going Up?
For the past two years, hotels dropped their prices to compete with each other. That hurt the whole industry, and now they want to win that money back.
The biggest price jumps will hit hotels that recently renovated. Properties that upgraded their rooms and amenities will charge the most.
How Will This Get Decided?
Hotel leaders and travel companies will meet at the Cancún Travel Mart on October 22 to 24. That's where deals get made for the whole winter season.
Last year, that event generated around $5.2 billion in business. This year, organizers are hoping to beat that number.
What Should You Do?
Book early if you want the best price. Once winter contracts are locked in, rates will likely climb fast.

Sargassum Report |
A massive wave of seaweed hit Mexico's Caribbean beaches this year, and cleanup crews are working harder than ever to fight it. This year, the amount of sargassum has been huge.
A Record-Breaking Cleanup
Crews in the state of Quintana Roo have collected a record-breaking 133,646 tons of sargassum seaweed from the beaches. This is a new high for the state and shows how big the problem has been this year.
In the town of Puerto Morelos, teams have removed over 18,000 tons of seaweed. While other towns like Cancún have seen more, the local effort is still a major part of the fight.
How the Cleanup Works
The cleanup is a large team effort. It involves local workers, state employees, and even the Mexican Navy all working together to keep the coast beautiful for everyone.
They use several methods, including boats that collect seaweed in the water and long floating barriers to block it. On the sand, workers use special tools and machines to clear what washes ashore.
People are also finding new uses for the seaweed. Some local businesses are turning the sargassum into useful things like building bricks and other materials. Read More... |
