Weekly Weather |
Every town has its secrets. In Puerto Morelos, most visitors stick to the beautiful restaurants along the beach, and many of them are great.
But if you want to eat where the locals eat, where the flavors are deep-rooted and the prices don’t have a "tourist tax," you have to cross the highway into la colonia.
And that’s where you’ll find this local favorite spot for real-deal seafood: Coctelería El Sazón Jarocho.
This isn't a fancy place.
You won’t find trendy decor or clever mood lighting. What you will find is a bustling, no-frills restaurant on the busy Avenida Timón, packed with local families, workers on their lunch break, and anyone who knows where to get the best seafood in town.
The name "Jarocho" means it comes from Veracruz, a state in Mexico famous for its incredible seafood, and this place lives up to that reputation.
The menu is all about fresh, honest-to-goodness seafood.
If you only try one thing, make it the seafood soup (sopa de mariscos). It’s legendary.
The broth is rich and flavorful, and it’s absolutely loaded with fresh fish, shrimp, octopus, and more. It’s a meal in a bowl and the perfect cure for anything that ails you.
But don’t stop there. Their ceviches and cocktails are bright, fresh, and perfect for a hot day.
The shrimp empanadas are crispy and delicious, and the garlic fish fillet (filete al mojo de ajo) is simple, classic, and cooked perfectly every time.
The portions are huge
Yet the prices are so reasonable you’ll feel like you’ve discovered a secret. Because you have.
This is the kind of place you come to for the food, not the scene. You’ll hear Spanish spoken all around you, the sound of sizzling from the kitchen, and the happy chatter of people enjoying a good meal. It’s an authentic taste of our town.
So, if you’re feeling adventurous and want to eat some of the best seafood of your life, take a taxi over to the colonia side and find the blue building with "El Sazón Jarocho" on it. You won’t regret it.

"In Puerto Morelos, every sunset feels like a personal invitation to slow down and savor the moment." |
Insider Tip: Fruterías |
The Freshest Juice is at a Frutería Instead of buying bottled juice, stop by a “frutería” (fruit stand) for a freshly prepared “jugo” or “agua fresca.” |

Get ready, food lovers! The Caribbean Grill Festival is returning to Puerto Morelos on October 25 and 26, 2025.
This popular event will fill the Ventana al Mar esplanade and Casco Antiguo with delicious grilled food and community fun. It’s the fourth time Puerto Morelos has hosted this growing tradition.
The festival has become a big hit, with attendance growing over 50% each year since 2023. This year, over 30 stands will offer a huge variety of grilled meats, seafood, vegetables, drinks, and desserts.
Famous chefs, including Andrés Salas from Spain, will be there to share their skills, and Jacob Chocolatería will offer smoked chocolate.
You can also enjoy music from local bands and watch master classes to learn grilling tips. The festival expects over 1500 visitors daily and plans to grill more than 800 kilograms of food.
Plus, a portion of the money raised helps families through DIF Quintana Roo, making it a celebration that gives back. Read More... |
Puerto Morelos is quietly building a honey industry with strong roots in tradition and a clear focus on quality.
In Leona Vicario, two producer groups are moving the work forward, one managing European honeybees and another focused on native stingless Melipona bees.
Municipal and state programs have supplied colonies, apiaries, and safety equipment, helping producers organize and scale.
The municipality notes a baseline of about three tons annually and a community capacity that can reach up to 15 tons, with a target of 20 tons per year to strengthen export potential.
Local honey carries the “Hecho en Quintana Roo” seal and has already sold in Campeche, Yucatán, and Tabasco. A first export shipment to Canada in 2025 marks a major milestone.
Beekeepers are also renewing varroa-free certification, a key step for bee health and market access.
Melipona honey, collected from traditional log hives, holds cultural value across the Yucatán and commands higher prices for its distinctive taste and uses.
Together, these efforts support family incomes, protect native bees, and put Puerto Morelos honey on a growing map. Read More... |
The familiar blue 20-peso bill, a common sight in Puerto Morelos, is now being retired.
Mexico's central bank, Banxico, has started pulling these bills from circulation. Banks must stop giving them out and send them back to the central bank.
Don't worry if you still have these blue bills. They are still good to use for shopping or paying for things, and banks will accept them for deposits. There's no rush to spend them all right away.
New money is already here to take its place. You might see a green and reddish 20-peso bill from the "G family," which shows Mexico's independence.
There's also a special 12-sided 20-peso coin that came out in 2021.
This change is part of a plan to make Mexico's money more modern. One main reason is that coins last longer and cost less to make than paper bills.
Other bills, like the 50 and 100 peso notes, have also been updated with new designs. Read More... |
