1. 🎨 1st International Painting Symposium Closing Celebration

The 1st International Painting Symposium, The Colors of the Caribbean, comes to a close this Saturday with an evening of celebration, music, and cultural recognition at the Puerto Morelos Cultural Center and Museum.

The closing event will feature a cocktail reception, live music from Grammy Award winner Juan D Anyelica, and the formal presentation of diplomas to all participating international and national artists.

The evening will also include the official donation of artworks created during the symposium to the Puerto Morelos Museum, the municipal government, and event sponsors, establishing a lasting cultural legacy for the community.

The exhibition itself continues through June 29, so if you haven’t yet explored the work of the artists from Spain, France, China, the United Kingdom, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Turkey, and Mexico, you still have time to visit.

Changora Drums brings more than three decades of global percussion exploration to Parque Fundadores for a free concert celebrating ancestral sounds and contemporary rhythms.

Featuring the incredible Flopa Escobar Malugani and Changora, this performance is presented as part of the 2025 PECDA Scholarship recognition.

Changora has spent decades studying African and flamenco percussion in Mexico and Spain, performing at international festivals like WOMAD and collaborating with renowned artists such as Lila Downs and La Unión.

This evening is a sonic journey through time and space, from tribal roots to electronic music, exploring the vibrations of global percussion in the heart of Puerto Morelos.

Cancún just got its first ever Municipal Chamber Orchestra, and free concerts are already on the way. This is a big deal for anyone living nearby, including residents of Puerto Morelos.

What's Happening in Cancún

The Benito Juárez city council launched the new orchestra to bring live classical music to more people.

The plan is to hold two free public concerts every month. Over time, the ensemble will grow into a full symphony orchestra.

Why Puerto Morelos Should Care

City leaders want the music to reach beyond traditional concert halls and into neighborhoods and community spaces. Puerto Morelos is just a short drive up the highway, putting it right in the path of that outreach.

If the orchestra expands as planned, the Riviera Maya corridor could see live performances coming its way.

Cancún already runs a theater company, a choir, and a folk ballet. This orchestra is the newest piece of a growing cultural scene.

What's Going On

Three things are hitting at once. Pollen is high, heat is stirring up dust, and a giant cloud of Saharan dust is blowing in from Africa. This happens every summer and usually peaks from late June through mid-August.

Who Gets Hit the Hardest

People with asthma or allergies will feel it the most. But even healthy people can get headaches, sore throats, and burning eyes. Kids and older adults need to be extra careful too.

How to Protect Yourself

Stay inside during the hottest part of the day and keep your windows closed. Set your air conditioning to recirculate, and drinking extra water also helps your body fight off irritation.

Most symptoms will pass when the dust cloud moves on. But if you have trouble breathing, see a doctor right away.

Sargassum Report

Puerto Morelos beaches are clean and beautiful right now, even as nearby towns struggle with massive seaweed arrivals. A mix of nature and hard work is keeping things looking great.

The Reef Is a Natural Shield

A giant coral reef sits just offshore and blocks much of the sargassum seaweed before it ever reaches the beach. This gives Puerto Morelos a big advantage over places like Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

The Town Is Pitching In Too

Local officials and the Navy have set up barriers in the water to catch seaweed early. Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz is leading a full-time cleanup crew to remove anything that gets through.

But Don't Relax Too Much

Experts warn this could be a bad sargassum year, and conditions can change fast. The worst months are happening right now, so things could look very different from one day to the next.
