Puerto Morelos Is Building Its Biggest Police Station Ever

Puerto Morelos is getting a major upgrade to its public safety. A brand new police headquarters is being built, and it is one of the largest investments in security the town has ever seen.

What Is Being Built

The new station will be built on a 1.5-hectare lot along Federal Highway 307, near the entrance to the Ruta de los Cenotes.

It sits close to the Tren Maya station, making it a smart spot for quick emergency response. The project starts with 20 million pesos in funding.

A Bigger Plan for Safety

This station is part of a larger 43-million-peso security plan approved for 2026. The town already added 15 new patrol cars, two drones, and certified 29 new police officers.

The city is also working toward 200 surveillance cameras across the area.

Why It Matters

Puerto Morelos is growing fast, and the Ruta de los Cenotes will see more traffic from tourists and Tren Maya riders.

The new station will be the central hub for Puerto Morelos security. It is another step toward building a safer town.

Puerto Morelos Hurricane Season 2026: Don't Let the Calm Fool You

A quieter hurricane season is expected in 2026, but experts say that doesn't mean residents should relax. One storm is all it takes to cause serious damage.

What to Expect This Season

Forecasters predict 11 to 15 named storms this year, which is slightly below average. El Niño is the reason, creating strong winds over the Atlantic that break up storms before they grow. The Caribbean may get a break, but the Gulf of Mexico's warm waters could still fuel rapid storm growth.

Puerto Morelos Has Been Hit Before

Hurricane Wilma struck near Puerto Morelos in 2005 with winds of 132 mph. Hurricane Delta hit just north of town in 2020, bringing gusts of 110 mph. Neither season was considered unusually active.

How to Stay Safe

Quintana Roo uses a color-coded alert system. Every resident should have this memorized before June 1.

• Blue means a storm has been detected that could affect us. Stay informed.
• Green means low risk. Start checking your supplies. 
• Yellow means moderate risk. Secure loose items outside. 
• Orange means high probability of landfall. Have your evacuation plan ready and expect businesses to close. 
• Red means landfall is imminent. Shelter in place and stay inside.

Also familiarize yourself with Mexico's New Mobile Phone Rain & Flood Alert System. And check on storm formation and tracking at the NOAA National Hurricane Center.

The season runs June 1 through November 30, so now is the time to stock supplies, and know your evacuation plan.

From Smelly Seaweed to Useful Products

Every summer, tons of stinky seaweed called sargassum washes up on Mexican beaches. Now, instead of just throwing it away, businesses are finding smart ways to use it.

A Big New Plan

More than 150 hotels and 600 restaurants have joined a project called Caribe Circular.

The goal is to turn sargassum into everyday items like plates, spoons, packaging, and even cardboard boxes for online shopping.

Puerto Morelos Is at the Center

The town of Puerto Morelos was chosen as home base for a special 38-acre zone where companies will process sargassum into new products.

The town's famous coral reef actually helps by catching much of the seaweed before it even hits the beach.

More Than Just Plates and Forks

The list of products keeps growing. Scientists and businesses are working to turn sargassum into building materials, fertilizers, biofuels, and even dental products.

The seaweed that has caused headaches for over a decade may soon become one of the region's most valuable resources.
