If you have been looking for a reason to head south toward Playa del Carmen, this weekend gives you a good one.
The Guelaguetza Riviera Maya 2026 festival brings one of Mexico's most beloved cultural celebrations straight to the Caribbean coast, and it is completely free to attend.
What Is the Guelaguetza?
The Guelaguetza is Oaxaca's most important cultural festival, held traditionally every July in the city of Oaxaca.
The word comes from the Zapotec language and means something close to "offering" or "sharing with others." It features regional dances, traditional music, colorful costumes, and food that represents the many indigenous communities of Oaxaca.
Bringing this celebration to the Riviera Maya is a big deal. It gives people on the coast a rare chance to experience something deeply rooted in Mexican tradition without making the long trip inland.
When and Where
The festival runs March 7 and 8 at Parque Fundadores in Playa del Carmen. Both days run from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., giving you over 12 hours of programming each day.
Things actually kick off a day early on March 6 at 6 p.m. with a traditional calenda parade through the streets near Parque Fundadores.
These colorful processions are full of dancers, musicians, and giant puppet figures called mojigangas. It is worth showing up just for that.
The Food Alone Is Worth the Trip
A gastronomic market will feature some of Oaxaca's most iconic dishes, including tlayudas, tamales, mole, and garnachas. You can also find pan de yema, marquesote, chapulines, and artisanal chocolate.
For drinks, look for artisanal mezcal and traditional ciruela curados, a fruit-based drink that is hard to find outside of Oaxaca.
Live Music and Crafts
Confirmed performers include Nylzher, Patricia Alcaráz, and Omar Osorio with his orchestra.
There will also be traditional costume fashion shows, regional dance performances, and a crafts market featuring work from Oaxacan artisan communities.
Worth the Drive from Puerto Morelos
Playa del Carmen is about 35 to 40 minutes south of Puerto Morelos on Highway 307. Parking near the festival area can be tricky, so arriving early or taking the ADO bus from the Puerto Morelos highway stop is a smart move.
This is the kind of cultural event that does not come around often on this stretch of coast. Make the trip. |
