Puerto Morelos has some of the most beautiful coastline in all of Quintana Roo. Now, local businesses and community groups have a chance to help keep it that way.

Mexico's federal environmental agency, Semarnat, has launched a beach adoption program across Quintana Roo.

More than 65 beaches are now available for businesses, civil associations, and environmental groups to adopt and maintain. Puerto Morelos is one of the municipalities included in the program.

What Does "Adopting" a Beach Actually Mean?

It is simpler than it sounds. A business or group selects a stretch of coastline and commits to keeping it clean and free of waste for a set period of time.

Participants agree to regular cleanups and responsible environmental practices. The goal is to protect marine life, reduce pollution, and keep the beaches looking their best for residents and visitors alike.

Why This Matters for Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos sits right next to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest coral reef system in the world. What ends up on the beach does not stay on the beach. Trash and debris can wash into the reef and cause serious damage to the ecosystem.

The town has worked hard to maintain its reputation as a quieter, more authentic alternative to Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Clean beaches are a big part of that identity. This program gives local businesses a direct way to invest in that reputation.

How to Sign Up

The registration process is straightforward. Interested businesses or groups send a request to the official Semarnat email address: adoptaunaplaya@semarnat.gob.mx.

From there, participants define the specific area they want to maintain and agree to the program's guidelines. Semarnat has a digital platform with full details on requirements and responsibilities.

A Real Opportunity for Local Businesses

Hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and dive shops in Puerto Morelos all depend on healthy beaches and a clean reef. This program is a low-cost, high-impact way to give back to the environment that supports the local economy.

It also sends a strong message to eco-conscious travelers, who are increasingly choosing destinations based on environmental values.

If your business or group is interested, do not wait. Reach out to Semarnat directly and ask which Puerto Morelos beaches are currently available. The coastline here belongs to all of us, and keeping it clean is everyone's job.
