Puerto Morelos is known for hosting vibrant beach sports events, drawing international competitors to its shores, and next weekend is shaping up to be the biggest one yet.
What to Expect on the Beach
For 3 days more than 150 teams from across the globe will compete on nine courts set up along the beach, with matches running daily from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
That is a lot of volleyball, and a lot of energy in a town that is usually known for its quiet, laid-back vibe.
Friday May 15th kicks off with mixed-category play. Saturday May 16th brings the men's and women's brackets, along with the official opening ceremony at 11:00 a.m. The finals and awards ceremony wrap things up Sunday May 17th at 6:30 p.m.
Who Is Coming
This is not just a local tournament. Beach volleyball events in the region often draw competitors from Mexico and international visitors. Organizers say more than 300 competitors will participate this year.
And it is not just the players showing up. Coaches, families, and fans travel with the teams, which means hotels, restaurants, and shops all feel the boost.
How the Festival Has Grown
Beach volleyball tournaments in Puerto Morelos and the Riviera Maya have grown in popularity, attracting teams from across Mexico and beyond.
That kind of growth does not happen by accident. Local government supports sports tourism initiatives in Puerto Morelos, treating it as a key piece of the town's sports tourism strategy.
Why It Matters for Puerto Morelos
Sports tourism has become a real engine for this town. Sports events in Puerto Morelos boost local hotel occupancy and tourism. The players and their families fill rooms, eat at local restaurants, and explore everything Puerto Morelos has to offer, from the reef to the cenotes.
The goal, according to organizers, is not just to put Puerto Morelos on the sports map. It is to create real, measurable economic impact for local businesses.
A Good Weekend to Be Here
Even if you are not a volleyball fan, this weekend will have a great atmosphere along the beach. The competition runs all day, the crowd is international, and the energy is different from a typical weekend in town.
Puerto Morelos has always been a place that punches above its weight. This festival is one more reason why. |
