The Power Is Finally On: CFE's New Substation Is Good News for Puerto Morelos
If you've ever lost power during a summer heat wave, or watched your A/C flicker off during a busy holiday weekend, you know exactly why this news matters.
A New Substation Goes Live Next Door
Over the weekend of April 19, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) officially put new substations into operation in Cancun (Benito Juarez municipality).
These are part of the 2025–2030 Strengthening and Expansion Plan for the National Transmission Network, a major effort to strengthen Mexico's national power system.
According to the CFE, the goal is to increase the quality of electrical energy for the benefit of 708,788 electrical users in the peninsular region. That includes residents and businesses right here in Puerto Morelos.
Why This Matters to Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos sits between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and our grid has long been squeezed by the explosive growth happening on both sides of us.
Part of a Much Bigger Plan
The new substations aren't a one-off fix. The additional substations are part of an $8.1 billion USD project by the Government of Mexico to improve the country's electrical system.
Earlier in April, CFE announced capacitor bank installations in seven substations in northern Quintana Roo to prepare for summer 2025 demand.
These upgrades work together to stabilize the entire northern Quintana Roo grid, which Puerto Morelos depends on.
What to Expect Going Forward
No infrastructure upgrade erases every outage overnight. The Riviera Maya is growing fast, and demand keeps climbing, especially heading into the hot summer months.
But the pattern is clear: CFE is investing heavily in this region, and Puerto Morelos is finally getting attention it has long needed.
Keep the CFE Contigo app on your phone and the number 071 saved. And if you see CFE crews working in your neighborhood, that's a good sign, not a bad one. |
