Puerto Morelos residents and visitors can now surf the internet for free in the heart of town.
Two new Wi-Fi hotspots launched in central Puerto Morelos this month, bringing high-speed connectivity to one of the Riviera Maya's most charming coastal communities.
What's New Downtown
The free Wi-Fi modules are located in two popular spots: Fundadores Park and Fishermen's Wharf. Governor Mara Lezama officially opened the service on January 11, 2026, alongside Puerto Morelos Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu and State Tourism Secretary Bernardo Cueto Riestra.
Each module covers more than 50 linear meters and can connect up to 200 devices at the same time. The signal comes from a one gigabit per second connection, which means fast, reliable internet for everyone using it.
Why This Matters for Puerto Morelos
The free Wi-Fi project helps local businesses and the community economy. Artisans, boat operators, and shop owners can now accept electronic payments more easily.
Tourists get a better experience when they can stay connected and share their Puerto Morelos adventures online.
The project took about six months to complete. Work began in July 2025 through a partnership between the state government and Gignet, a digital transformation company.
Part of a Bigger Plan
Puerto Morelos is not the first destination in Quintana Roo to get this service. Cancun launched similar hotspots in 2023 at Playa Delfines and KilĂłmetro Cero, where they connect more than 2,500 devices daily. Tulum added modules in 2024 that connect over 650 devices each day.
The state government says this expansion is part of a larger digital transformation strategy. The goal is to bring free, high-speed internet to tourist destinations throughout the Mexican Caribbean.
How to Use It
Simply open the Wi-Fi settings on your phone, tablet, or laptop and look for the public network. Connect and you are ready to go. No password or registration is required.
The service is available to both visitors and local residents. Whether you are checking email, messaging family, or posting photos, the connection is stable and fast enough for most online activities.
Puerto Morelos continues to modernize while keeping its small-town charm. The new Wi-Fi hotspots are another sign that this fishing village turned tourist destination is moving forward. |
