When the holiday season arrives here in Puerto Morelos, a special beer starts appearing on shelves.
It’s called Noche Buena, and it’s a beloved part of Christmas celebrations across Mexico, including right here in our sunny corner of the Yucatan.
This seasonal brew offers a taste of tradition that locals and visitors alike enjoy.
What is Noche Buena?
Noche Buena literally means "good night," but it actually refers to Christmas Eve. The poinsettia flower, also called "nochebuena" in Spanish, is a symbol of the season, and you’ll see it on the beer’s label.
This beer is Mexico's only traditional Christmas beer, a true sign that the holidays are here.
Unlike many of the lighter lagers common in Mexico, Noche Buena is a dark bock.
This style of beer has German roots, known for being rich and full-bodied. It was originally made by monks to sustain them during winter and fasting periods.
Our Noche Buena has a reddish-brown color and a thick, lasting head.
When you take a sip, you might notice flavors of chocolate, caramel, prunes, and toasted malts. It finishes with a dry aftertaste and has a pleasant, mild herbal hop note.
A Taste of History
Noche Buena holds a special place in Mexican brewing history. It was the first bock beer ever made in Mexico.
Its story began in 1924 in Orizaba, Veracruz, started by German immigrants. They first brewed it for themselves and shared it as gifts.
This sharing created demand, and soon the brewery started making it as a seasonal treat for winter.
That’s how it got its festive name. This beer is available only from October to February each year, making it a true seasonal delight.
Pairs With Seasonal Foods
Noche Buena pairs especially well with seasonal Mexican Christmas foods because its rich, malty profile mirrors the warmth and depth of holiday dishes.
The beer’s toasted malt sweetness and subtle caramel notes complement foods like romeritos (wild herbs steepedin mole), bacalao a la vizcaĂna (salty codfish), and tamales, all of which feature layered flavors built from slow cooking, herbs, chiles, and sometimes a touch of sweetness.
Rather than overpowering these dishes, the beer reinforces their savory character, enhancing spices and sauces while keeping the palate balanced.
Finding it in Puerto Morelos
You’ll find Noche Buena in most liquor stores, tienditas like The Six & Oxxo, and supermarkets around Puerto Morelos during the holiday months.
Also some restaurants will have it this time of year, but it won't be on the menu. So always ask your server.
But be warned... it sells out fast! There's a limited supply and it's very popular with locals and expats.
It's a bit more expensive than other common Mexican beers, but it's worth it for the special occasion. Many of us here enjoy it as part of our Christmas and New Year's gatherings.
It’s not just about the alcohol content, which is 5.9%. It’s about sharing a special drink with family and friends.
Whether you're enjoying a holiday meal or just relaxing by the beach, a Noche Buena adds to the festive spirit of our town.
So, next time you’re stocking up for your holiday celebrations in Puerto Morelos, look for the bottles with the poinsettia.
Grab a Noche Buena and enjoy a true taste of Mexican Christmas tradition. It's a perfect way to celebrate the season here in our beautiful home. |
