Puerto Morelos' Nuestra Cosecha market connects local farming families directly with consumers who buy their food.
What Is Nuestra Cosecha?
The market launched at the Zetina Gasca neighborhood sports dome, promoted by Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz. Fifteen producers participated in an early session, alongside local artisans selling handmade goods.
The name means "Our Harvest," and that's exactly what it is. No middlemen, no markups from outside distributors, just producers selling directly to you.
What You'll Find There
The product lineup is solid for anyone who cooks at home or runs a kitchen. Expect fresh produce like tomatoes, papaya, lemons, radishes, squash, and habanero peppers, based on typical offerings.
Beyond produce, vendors brought spices, seasoning pastes, honey, and coconut-based products. There were also natural ointments, essential oils, and ornamental plants for sale.
If you've been buying your habaneros or honey from a supermarket chain, this is a much better option, and the money stays local.
The Hotel Connection
This is where it gets interesting for the broader Puerto Morelos economy. Officials are working to connect these local producers with hotels and restaurants in the area.
That kind of hotel partnership can be a game-changer for small producers who currently have limited ways to scale up.
Why This Matters for Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos has always had a strong agricultural identity, especially in the communities inland like Leona Vicario. But those producers have historically had few direct ways to reach consumers in the coastal town or the tourist corridor.
Nuestra Cosecha changes that. It creates a visible, regular space where local food culture gets the attention it deserves.
The market is still in its early days, so expect it to grow as more producers join and word spreads. Getting there early, while it's still small and personal, is the best way to meet the people behind your food and find products you won't see anywhere else in town.
The plan for now is to have this be a monthly market. Keep an eye on the Puerto Morelos municipal announcements for confirmed dates and hours as the program develops. |
