Puerto Morelos Police to Wear Body Cameras as Part of Statewide Security Initiative

Big changes are coming to how our local police work here in Puerto Morelos. Soon, every police officer in Quintana Roo will be wearing a small camera on their uniform.

This new rule starts this year for all 11 municipalities, including Puerto Morelos.

A Step Towards Trust

This big step is meant to make things clearer between our police and the community.

State officials say these cameras will help make police actions more open. They also hope it will build more trust between us and our security forces.

The plan will first start with police who handle traffic and tourism. This is part of a bigger agreement by the State Council for Citizen Security. It's all about making our state safer and more transparent.

Cameras for Our Town

Our neighboring city, Benito Juárez, which includes Cancún, has already bought over 700 cameras. They spent about 31 million pesos on these devices.

Here in Puerto Morelos, our police force will also be getting these new cameras. We are part of the municipalities receiving 450 additional devices in 2025.

This means our local officers will soon be using this new technology.  And ensures even smaller towns like ours can join the program.

How the Cameras Work

Officers will pick up their cameras at the start of each shift. These cameras can record clear video and sound for up to 12 hours.

They will return them when their shift ends. The recordings are then downloaded and stored safely.

The system is set up so officers cannot change the footage themselves. This is important for keeping the recordings honest.

Quintana Roo is joining other states in Mexico that use body cameras. This move is part of a bigger plan to modernize law enforcement.

The goal is to improve public safety and ensure policing is more open for everyone.

Questions Remain

While this is a positive step, some questions still need answers. How will all this video be kept safe? Who gets to look at it? And what about our privacy here in Puerto Morelos as the program grows statewide?

These are important points that our community will want to understand better. For now, it’s good to know that our local police are getting new tools.

These tools are designed to make our interactions clearer and build a stronger, safer Puerto Morelos for all of us.
