The Seaweed Stops Here: How Puerto Morelos Is Winning the Sargassum Battle

While neighboring beach towns drown in seaweed, Puerto Morelos keeps beaches clean from sargassum using innovative barriers and eco-friendly seaweed recycling.

Puerto Morelos has managed to keep some stretches of beach more usable than many other parts of the Riviera Maya, even as sargassum continues to affect the region.

While towns to the north and south are buried under mountains of brown seaweed, Puerto Morelos is holding the line, and it's not by accident.

A Three-Kilometer Wall in the Water

A three-kilometer anti-sargassum barrier off the coast of Puerto Morelos has been credited by local and federal officials with helping reduce the amount of seaweed reaching the shore.

Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz and Mexico's Environment Secretary Alicia Bárcena Ibarra toured Playa Ventana al Mar together on June 7 to assess the barrier firsthand.

But the man-made barrier is only part of the story. Puerto Morelos sits near a reef system that can help alter nearshore conditions, which officials and local observers say may limit how much sargassum reaches the beach.

The barrier does not eliminate sargassum entirely, but local officials say it has helped the town recover more quickly than some open-coast beaches.

Boots on the Beach Every Day

The barrier doesn't work alone. Daily cleanup operations are carried out by municipal beach-management crews under Zofemat supervision.

During heavier sargassum arrivals, cleanup efforts are reinforced with additional workers and machinery, according to local officials.

The anti-sargassum response has involved coordination among federal authorities, the Navy, the municipality, and private-sector partners. Officials say coordination among multiple levels of government has been important to Puerto Morelos's response.

Turning a Problem Into a Product

Here is where things get interesting. The seaweed being pulled off local beaches does not just end up in a dump. Puerto Morelos is at the center of a regional plan to turn sargassum from a tourism liability into an industrial raw material.

Hotel, restaurant, and business leaders in the Mexican Caribbean have launched Caribe Circular, a circular-economy initiative designed to create a market for sargassum-based products.

CarbonWave operates a processing facility in Puerto Morelos and is one of the companies developing commercial uses for sargassum.

At CarbonWave's Puerto Morelos facility, freshly collected sargassum goes through multiple rinse cycles and a conveyor-belt quality check before reaching a screw press, a large automated device that separates the seaweed's liquid and solid components.

The result is a line of agricultural biostimulants and eco-friendly industrial products sold around the world.

CarbonWave says its agricultural biostimulant SargaPower is designed to support crop growth and soil health. The World Bank's International Finance Corporation invested $3 million in the company.

What's Coming Next

The town's role in the sargassum economy is only growing. A proposed biogas plant would use collected sargassum to generate energy, but its launch date remains subject to project development.

The biogas plant has been discussed alongside plans for a Circular Economy Development Hub in Puerto Morelos.

For residents and visitors, the message is simple. The beaches are clean, the work is real, and the seaweed that once threatened this town's economy is quietly becoming one of its most promising industries.
