Thinking about taking an Uber from the Cancun airport to your hotel? You might want to wait before you hit that "request" button.
Despite recent headlines saying ride-share apps won a court battle at Mexican airports, the situation on the ground tells a very different story.
What Uber Is Claiming
Uber Mexico recently highlighted a court-granted suspension from the Thirteenth Administrative Court of Mexico City, ordering National Guard operations at airports to comply with federal regulations and avoid arbitrary actions, rather than fully prohibiting detentions.
Uber is calling the previous crackdowns "arbitrary and discriminatory." They want their drivers, and their customers, to feel protected.
What the Mexican Government Is Saying
The SICT clarified that while the court suspension requires National Guard operations to follow regulations, it does not grant app-based companies like Uber the required authorization to provide passenger services to or from airports.
Airports in Mexico are federal territory. Without the proper permits, the government says authorities still have every legal right to cite and detain unauthorized drivers. The court ruling and the permit requirement are two separate things entirely.
What Is Actually Happening at the Airport
Reports indicate National Guard operations continue under regulated terms following the suspension, and Uber lacks airport operating permits, with drivers still facing potential enforcement risks including fines and impoundments from past incidents.
Tensions between ride-share drivers and authorities persist nationwide, including at major airports, amid ongoing legal disputes.
What This Means for Your Ride to Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos sits about 36 kilometers south of the Cancun airport, a quick and easy drive down the highway. It is one of the most common routes travelers take after landing.
But if your Uber driver gets pulled over on that airport access road, you are stranded with your bags. That is not how anyone wants to start a trip to the coast.
The Smart Move
Pre-book a licensed private transfer before you fly. Several reputable shuttle and transfer companies serve the Puerto Morelos corridor directly. It costs a little more than an app ride, but it is authorized, reliable, and drama-free.
The legal battle between Uber and the Mexican government is far from over. Until there is a clear resolution, the safest bet is to skip the app and book something official. |
