Every summer, the warm waters of the Mexican Caribbean become a sanctuary for whale sharks, the largest fish in the ocean.
These gentle giants migrate to the region to feed on plankton, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to swim alongside them.
Notably, Mexico is home to the Whale Shark Biosphere Reserve, a protected area dedicated to preserving this magnificent species.
When Is the Official Whale Shark Season?
The whale shark season typically runs from mid-May to mid-September, with peak sightings occurring between June and August.
During these months, the waters are teeming with plankton, attracting large numbers of whale sharks to the area.
Where Can You Swim with Whale Sharks?
The Whale Shark Biosphere Reserve spans approximately 1,460 square kilometers, stretching from north of Holbox Island to Contoy Island in Quintana Roo.
However, swimming with these gentle giants is also possible off the coasts of Isla Mujeres and north of CancĂşn.
