Every summer, the warm waters of the Mexican Caribbean become a sanctuary for whale sharks, the largest fish in the ocean.

These gentle giants migrate to the region to feed on plankton, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to swim alongside them.

Notably, Mexico is home to the Whale Shark Biosphere Reserve, a protected area dedicated to preserving this magnificent species.

When Is the Official Whale Shark Season?

The whale shark season typically runs from mid-May to mid-September, with peak sightings occurring between June and August.

During these months, the waters are teeming with plankton, attracting large numbers of whale sharks to the area.

Where Can You Swim with Whale Sharks?

The Whale Shark Biosphere Reserve spans approximately 1,460 square kilometers, stretching from north of Holbox Island to Contoy Island in Quintana Roo.

However, swimming with these gentle giants is also possible off the coasts of Isla Mujeres and north of CancĂşn.

Rules for Whale Shark Sightings

To ensure the safety of both visitors and whale sharks, the following regulations are in place:

  • Boats must remain at least 50 meters apart.
  • Kayaks or lifeboats are not permitted for this activity.
  • Dives are organized in shifts of no more than 30 minutes, with groups of up to five people per guide.
  • Visitors must wear life jackets at all times.
  • Touching whale sharks is prohibited, and swimmers must maintain a distance of at least five meters.
  • Sunscreen and non-biodegradable creams are not allowed.

Whale sharks are docile and pose no threat to humans, as they feed on plankton and small fish.
