Cancún is throwing itself a big birthday party this April, and if you live in Puerto Morelos, this celebration is closer to home than you might think.
A City Born from Nothing
Cancún officially became a city on April 22, 1970. Before that, it was a narrow sandbar with fewer than 120 people living on it.
The Mexican government chose it as a planned tourism development, and within decades it became one of the most visited destinations on the planet.
Puerto Morelos existed long before Cancún did. It was the main port for the region, shipping chicle and other goods from the Yucatan Peninsula.
When Cancún exploded, Puerto Morelos quietly stayed itself, which is exactly why so many people love living here.
What's Happening in April
Cancún's 56th anniversary festivities in April 2026 include a major free concert by Los Ángeles Azules on Sunday, April 19, at Malecón Tajamar.
Additional events like concerts and cultural activities are expected; check official municipal announcements for the full schedule, anticipated around early April.
The El Meco Connection
El Meco is a Maya archaeological site that often gets overlooked. It sits just outside Cancún near Puerto Juárez and dates back to around 300 AD.
For anyone living in Puerto Morelos, El Meco is an easy day trip and far less crowded than Tulum or Chichén Itzá.
Worth the Short Drive
Cancún is only about 35 kilometers north of Puerto Morelos. These April events are free, family-friendly, and a genuine celebration of the region's history.
The full official schedule will be released soon, so keep an eye on the Cancún municipal announcements before making plans. |
