A widely reported incident involved a traveler who said he was charged thousands of dollars for a short taxi ride between terminals at Cancun International Airport. The story went viral, and it is a warning every visitor heading to Puerto Morelos should read before they land.

What Happened

The traveler needed a quick ride to meet friends at the next terminal. The driver ran his card twice, claiming it was declined both times.  Thinking his bank had flagged the charge, the traveler tapped his card on a second reader showing an $18 fare and went on his way.

Once he regained internet access, he said he saw two large charges on his card statement and immediately contacted his bank. The tap-to-pay card was the same one the driver had claimed was "declined," meaning unauthorized charges had been run on the first reader before the smaller amount appeared on the second.

A Growing Problem With Real Consequences

Reports of overcharging and fare disputes at Cancun International Airport have circulated for years, with travelers describing unexpectedly high prices and changing fare terms.

Quintana Roo officials have publicly criticized airport taxi overcharging as harmful to the state's tourism industry. Authorities have taken disciplinary action against some drivers accused of overcharging tourists. In some reported cases, authorities have investigated drivers accused of detaining passengers while demanding higher fares.

The U.S. State Department advises American travelers to exercise increased caution in Mexico. Travelers should review the latest official advisory and follow its guidance on transportation options.

How This Affects You Coming Into Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos is a short drive south of Cancun International Airport, depending on traffic and route. Every visitor coming here passes through that same airport, which makes this scam directly relevant to your trip.

Safe, affordable options exist. Public bus service and other shared transportation options are available from the airport to Puerto Morelos, and fares and travel times should be checked before departure.

Tickets can be purchased through the bus operator's official sales points or channels. Pre-booked private transfers through your hotel or a verified shuttle company are also a solid choice, with a driver holding your name waiting inside the terminal.

Heading back to the airport from Puerto Morelos? Some local transport providers offer scheduled shared rides to the airport, but travelers should verify current times and fares directly before using them. Contact the provider directly through its official channels to confirm current service details.

The rule is simple: decide how you are getting to and from the airport before you land, and never get into an unbooked taxi. The scams are real, but they are completely avoidable.
