Getting from Cancun International Airport to Puerto Morelos has always been a bit of a gamble.
Prices vary wildly, pushy taxi vendors crowd the arrivals hall, and first-time visitors often end up paying way too much. That may finally be about to change.
Official Fare Schedules Are Coming
Quintana Roo officials continue efforts to regulate airport taxis amid complaints of irregular operations.
Travelers to destinations like Puerto Morelos (~36 km, 30-40 minute drive) should pre-book private transfers for fixed pricing, as on-site taxi fares remain variable (historically 600-1,000+ pesos).
This is a big deal for Puerto Morelos. The town sits about 36 kilometers south of the airport, roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive.
On-site taxi prices to Puerto Morelos (~36 km south) vary widely based on negotiation; pre-booked private shuttles offer more predictable costs and door-to-door service, recommended by multiple providers.
What This Means If You Are Coming to Visit
Until the official fare schedule is published, the advice stays the same. Agree on a price before you get in any taxi. Ask to see a rate card if one is posted.
Pre-booked shuttles through reputable companies are still a solid option and often the most predictable in price.
Once the new zones and fare schedules are in place, using an app-based service from a secure pickup area will likely be the easiest and most transparent option for the ride down to Puerto Morelos.
The Bottom Line
This is a long overdue fix for one of the most stressful parts of arriving in the Riviera Maya.
Keep an eye out for the official fare schedule announcement, which is expected soon. When it drops, it will be worth saving a copy on your phone before you travel. |
