Cancun Airport Has Free Wi-Fi, Here's Why You Shouldn't Count On It When You Land |
What every Puerto Morelos traveler needs to know about staying connected from the moment your plane touches down |

Every week, someone in the Puerto Morelos Facebook groups asks the same question. "I just landed at CUN, my phone has no data, and my driver can't find me. Help!" It happens constantly, and it doesn't have to.
Here is what you need to know before your next flight into Cancun International Airport.
Yes, The Wi-Fi Is Free
The airport offers free Wi-Fi across all terminals (1, 2, 3, and 4). That covers arrival halls, departure gates, and baggage claim.
The network name to look for is "CUN Wi-Fi," operated by Prodigy Mobile. Select it, open your browser (you'll be redirected to the host page), sign in or create an account, and accept terms to connect.
Do not connect to any other network. Spoofed networks exist in busy airports, and connecting to the wrong one is a fast way to have a bad day.
The Catch Everyone Runs Into
The free connection cuts off after 60 minutes. When it does, a screen pops up that looks like it wants your credit card. It doesn't. Just close the premium offer and reconnect to start a fresh free session.
The signal is also weakest right where you need it most, near the exit doors and the transportation pickup area outside. That crowded outdoor zone where drivers wait is basically a dead zone for airport Wi-Fi.
Why This Matters For Puerto Morelos Arrivals
If you are taking a taxi, shuttle, or private transfer down to Puerto Morelos, you need a working connection the moment you step outside. That is roughly a 25 to 30 minute drive south on the 307, and coordinating your pickup without data is stressful and chaotic.
The airport Wi-Fi might get you through baggage claim. But counting on it to locate your driver outside in the heat and the crowd is a gamble.
The Smarter Move
The best solution locals and frequent visitors use is an eSIM. You download it before you leave home, and the moment your plane lands, you activate it. You have data instantly, no fighting with airport login screens.
Mexican SIM cards from Telcel or AT&T Mexico are another solid option and are easy to find once you are settled in Puerto Morelos, but they won't help you on arrival day.
Bottom Line
The free airport Wi-Fi works, just don't rely on it for anything critical. Get your connectivity sorted before you land, and your first hour in Mexico will go a lot smoother than most people's. |
