Residents in Puerto Morelos now have closer access to a new kind of specialized surgery in Quintana Roo.

Hospital General de Cancún has completed the state's first robot-assisted surgeries using the VERSIUS surgical system, according to state officials. The first two procedures were gallbladder removals performed on September 3, shortly after the program was inaugurated on August 31.

Why This Matters for Puerto Morelos

For people in Puerto Morelos who rely on public healthcare, Cancún is often the closest point of access for more specialized medical services. Until now, procedures that required more advanced technology could mean looking toward larger medical centers in places like Mérida or Mexico City.

This new program does not mean every surgery will suddenly be robotic, and it does not replace the judgment of doctors. But it does give local hospitals another tool for certain procedures, with the potential for smaller incisions, more precision, and shorter recovery times when a patient is a good candidate.

What Actually Happened

The first reported patient was a 48-year-old man treated for chronic cholecystitis. State officials reported no complications from the initial procedures.

The VERSIUS system is not an autonomous robot making decisions on its own. A trained surgeon controls the instruments using console-style controls and a high-definition 3D view of the surgical area.

What Comes Next

Hospital officials say the program is expected to expand into several specialties, including general surgery, gynecology, urology, and thoracic surgery. Future procedures may include hysterectomies and some prostate cancer operations.

For Puerto Morelos residents, the practical takeaway is simple: some advanced public-hospital care may now be available closer to home. Patients will still need to be evaluated by their doctors to determine whether robot-assisted surgery is appropriate for their specific case.

It is an early step, but for healthcare access in northern Quintana Roo, it is a meaningful one.
