Puerto Morelos residents should prepare for an unusually chilly weekend as Arctic air continues to sweep across the Yucatan Peninsula. The current cool temperatures we're experiencing will drop even further with the arrival of cold front number 32.

Current Temperature Situation

State Civil Protection reported Thursday that residents across Quintana Roo woke up to temperatures between 10°C (50°F) and 23°C (73°F).

In Playa del Carmen, just north of Puerto Morelos, temperatures dropped to 14°C (57°F), while Cancun recorded 18.5°C (65°F).

These temperatures are significantly below normal for Puerto Morelos this time of year. Typically, daytime highs reach around 26-28°C (79-82°F) in late January, but the recent cold front has kept daytime highs only in the mid-20s°C.

Weekend Forecast

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) warns that a new Arctic air mass will arrive Friday night, bringing very strong winds between 50-70 km/h to our region.

This cold front will cause temperatures to decrease even further throughout the weekend.

The cold front will also bring heavy rainfall to southeastern Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula on Saturday and Sunday.

Puerto Morelos residents should expect strong north winds along the coast and possible high waves.

Preparing for the Cold

While Puerto Morelos rarely experiences truly cold weather, these unusually low temperatures call for some basic preparations:

1. Have light jackets or sweaters ready, especially for early mornings and evenings

2. Secure loose items around your property that could blow away in strong winds

3. Be prepared for possible power outages with flashlights and batteries

4. Keep pets indoors during the coldest parts of the day

Looking Ahead

According to the SMN, by Monday the cold front will move toward the Caribbean Sea and away from Mexico. While daytime temperatures will gradually increase, cold conditions will persist during mornings and nights.

The good news is that these cold snaps typically don't last long in our tropical climate. By next week, we should begin returning to more normal temperatures for this time of year.
