Get ready, Puerto Morelos, for a truly special celebration that lights up our beautiful coastline.
Our unique Day of the Dead boat parade, "Janal Pixan 2025, Mar de Almas, TradiciĂłn que da Vida," is just around the corner, promising two unforgettable evenings.
This isn't just any festival, it's a heartfelt tribute to loved ones who return to us during these sacred days.
A Sea of Souls Celebration
Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz and the Municipal Institute of Culture and Arts are inviting everyone to be part of this cherished tradition.
It's a beautiful mix of ancient Mayan beliefs and Catholic customs, bringing our community together.
The parade features boats adorned with colorful Day of the Dead decorations, creating a stunning spectacle on the water.
This unique event not only honors our ancestors, but it also gives a boost to our local businesses and strengthens our community ties.
It’s a chance for us all to remember and celebrate life, even as we honor those who have passed.
Boat Parade Contest Details
If you own a boat, this is your chance to shine. Fishing cooperatives, nautical service providers, sports clubs, and the general public can enter the decorated boat contest.
Your vessel needs to be decked out with Day of the Dead themes, using materials that are kind to our precious marine environment. Please, no plastics.
You can register at the Institute of Culture and Arts from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The deadline to sign up is October 17. Make sure your boat's documents are in order and you have a report confirming it’s seaworthy, keeping everyone safe. T
The parade will sail along the malecĂłn on November 1 and 2. Winners will be announced on the final day, with prizes of 19,000 pesos for first place, 13,000 for second, and 8,000 for third.
More Ways to Celebrate
The festival also includes several other exciting contests for everyone to enjoy. Hotels in our municipality are invited to create monumental Catrinas, those elegant skeleton figures.
These must be between 3 and 5 meters tall, made with biodegradable materials, and able to withstand our weather. Registration for Catrinas closes on October 24, with delivery by October 28.
There’s also a contest for artisan Catrinas and Alebrijes, those fantastical creatures. This is open to all ages, with free technique. Register by October 24 and deliver your craft by October 29.
Prizes are 10,000 pesos for first place, 7,000 for second, and 3,000 for third.
Businesses in the Casco Antiguo's main square can join the Facade Decoration contest. Deck out your storefronts in Day of the Dead style. Prizes are 10,000, 5,000, and 3,000 pesos for the top three.
Judging and Contact
All entries will be judged on creativity, originality, how well they fit the Day of the Dead theme, visual impact, the message they convey, and the use of sustainable materials.
This year’s Janal Pixan promises to be an unforgettable experience for both locals and visitors.
It’s a chance to immerse ourselves in one of Mexico’s most important and visually stunning traditions, right here in our beloved Puerto Morelos. |
