If you've walked the waterfront lately, you've noticed the crews working at the Muelle de Pescadores.
The Fishermen's Pier, one of the most recognizable spots in all of Puerto Morelos, is more than 70 percent finished with its second phase of reconstruction. This is a project that has been a long time coming.
A Pier With a Rough Few Years
The story of this pier really starts in October 2020, when Hurricane Zeta battered the Yucatán Peninsula and left the pier damaged. The pier had already been showing its age from years of deferred maintenance, and Zeta pushed it past the point of safe use.
For several years after the storm, the structure remained damaged while officials planned its reconstruction.
The first phase of reconstruction began in 2024. Municipal officials had pledged to restore the pier after it was damaged.
That phase, funded through a municipal environmental sanitation fund, replaced a damaged section of the dock with a new wooden structure built on piles and finished with hardwood decking. The first phase was formally inaugurated in 2025.
What Phase Two Is Building
So why is there a Phase Two? The first phase addressed the most critical section of the pier. This second phase focuses on rehabilitating and reinforcing the remaining 190-square-meter structure to bring the entire pier up to the same standard.
The investment for this phase is 3.8 million pesos, or about $190,000 U.S. dollars, depending on the exchange rate.
Workers are driving new wooden piles, installing beams, stringers, and cross-bracing, and laying down planks with stainless steel hardware.
Geotextile mesh is also being placed for environmental protection of the reef and seabed below.
The municipality also formed a citizen oversight committee in April to monitor the work. That kind of public accountability is a good sign.
What It Means for the Town
The pier is an important part of the waterfront, serving local fishermen and supporting visitors who come to see the harbor and nearby attractions.
With the work now past the 70 percent mark, officials say the pier is expected to reopen once construction is complete. |
