Every year, when the last days of May roll around, Puerto Morelos remembers its roots. This town was built by fishermen, and for one Saturday each year, that heritage takes center stage on the open water.
The Puerto Morelos Fishing Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, May 30, in observance of Mexico's Día de la Marina, or Navy Day. Registration is open now, and the prize pool this year is the biggest yet.
What Is Día de la Marina?
Día de la Marina is a national holiday in Mexico that honors the country's maritime workers and naval personnel.
For a coastal fishing village like Puerto Morelos, this holiday hits close to home. The sea isn't just scenery here. It's a way of life.
The Tournament Details
The competition is held under a catch-and-release format. Anglers will be competing for qualifying catches in several species approved by the tournament organizers.
The prize structure this year is serious money. According to the organizers, first place will receive 150,000 pesos, second place 100,000 pesos, and third place 50,000 pesos. The tournament will also include additional prizes for top finishers.
A Captains' Dinner is scheduled for the evening before the tournament, on Friday, May 29. It's a great way to meet the other crews and soak in the pre-tournament energy.
How to Register
Registration is available through the Puerto Morelos Tourism Office, and additional information can be obtained by contacting the organizers directly. Spots fill up, so don't wait on this one.
More Than Just Fishing
The tournament has always been a full community event, and 2026 is no different. During the tournament, the Ventana al Mar plaza will also host a seafood-themed gastronomic festival featuring local restaurants.
It's the kind of day where you can cheer on the boats, eat well, and feel the pulse of what makes Puerto Morelos different from every other town on the Riviera Maya.
A Tradition Worth Showing Up For
Puerto Morelos has seen continued tourism development in recent years. But the tournament also highlights Puerto Morelos' fishing heritage and its longstanding connection to the sea.
Whether you're entering a boat or just coming to watch and eat, May 30 is a day to be in Puerto Morelos. |
