Puerto Morelos Takes to the Sky With Its First Kite Festival |
Families, prizes, and giant kites filled Playa Sol on for an event organizers hope will become an annual tradition rooted in community and marine conservation. |
The sky above Playa Sol turned into a moving canvas on August 22, as Puerto Morelos launched its first-ever Festival del Papalotes kite festival.
Families, kids, and visitors filled the beach for a day that mixed fun, friendly competition, and a reminder of why this town's natural surroundings are worth protecting.
What Happened at Playa Sol
Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz led the event and personally handed out prizes to contest winners. The festival was designed to give families a new kind of gathering place, promote physical activity, and build awareness about caring for Puerto Morelos' marine environment.
Organizers said the festival aimed to create family-friendly spaces, promote physical activity, and strengthen environmental awareness.
The kite competition was the heart of the day. Contestants of all ages built and flew their own kites, and judges scored entries on creativity, design, and how well they flew.
Organizers encouraged the use of recycled materials, keeping the event in line with the town's environmental values.
The Winners
Gabriel Iván Ceballos Crespo took first place with his kite "Pulpo Rojo" (Red Octopus) and won 1,500 pesos. Alexis Paat came in second with "Mantarraya Negra" (Black Manta Ray) for 750 pesos, and Jesús Eduardo Canul Crespo finished third with "Pulpo Morado" (Purple Octopus) earning 500 pesos.
The day also included a recreational and sports rally with swimming, sack races, and rope exercises. The Pérez family won first place and 2,000 pesos, the Hernández family took second with 1,500 pesos, and the Reyes family earned third with 1,000 pesos.
More Than Just Fun
A municipal tourism official said the festival highlights Puerto Morelos as more than a beach destination. "Puerto Morelos offers a 100 percent family-friendly, safe environment," she said, calling it a home where families can truly connect.
The event also included zumba sessions and an exhibition of giant kites.
A Tradition in the Making
Officials said they hope the festival will return in future years. Mayor Tziu Muñoz also pointed out that events like this bring economic benefits, drawing families and visitors who spend money at local shops and restaurants.
If this first edition is any sign, Festival del Papalotes has the wings to become something Puerto Morelos looks forward to every year. |
