Puerto Morelos Is Building a Major New Police Headquarters
For years, the Puerto Morelos police force has made do with facilities that were never built for the job. That is about to change.
Ground has officially been broken on a brand new Citizen Security headquarters, and it is one of the biggest public safety investments this town has ever seen.
What Is Being Built and Where
The new station will sit on a 1.5-hectare plot in Superblock 17, right at the entrance to the Ruta de los Cenotes along Federal Highway 307.
If you have ever driven that stretch of the highway heading west toward the jungle, you know exactly the spot. It is a high-traffic area that connects the coast to the interior, and it sits near two Tren Maya stations.
Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz personally oversaw the site preparation on Monday, April 20. The initial investment is 20 million pesos, with additional funding coming from a state trust to support the facility's ongoing operations.
The location was chosen specifically for its strategic value, with ample parking, key access points, and the infrastructure needed to respond quickly to emergency calls.
Part of a Much Bigger Security Push
This station is not a standalone project. It is one piece of a larger 43-million-peso public security plan that the Puerto Morelos city council approved for 2026.
Earlier this year, the municipality added 15 new patrol units to its fleet. Each vehicle comes equipped with four security cameras, GPS tracking, and an interconnected radio system. The force also added two high-tech drones and certified 29 new officers.
On top of that, the municipality is working toward a goal of 200 video surveillance cameras across the town, with special focus on the Ruta de los Cenotes corridor. The new police station will serve as the operational hub for all of it.
Why This Matters for Residents
Anyone who has lived here long enough knows that Puerto Morelos has been growing fast. The Ruta de los Cenotes area in particular sees heavy traffic from tourists, locals, and now Tren Maya passengers.
Having a properly equipped, purpose-built security facility at that entrance point is a practical move, not just a political one.
The project is part of the strengthening of the security infrastructure, ensuring officers have the facilities they need while continuing to build a force that can keep pace with a growing municipality.
The new station, the new patrols, the cameras, the drones. It is starting to look like Puerto Morelos is finally building the security infrastructure that matches the town it is becoming. |
