Cancun is getting a brand new animal hospital, and the project shows how seriously Quintana Roo is taking pet care across the region. The city broke ground on the 30 million peso facility in January, with Mayor Ana Paty Peralta leading the ceremony at a location in Superblock 99.
A Modern Facility for Your Pets
The new hospital will be nearly 1,000 square meters and include four consulting rooms, two operating rooms, and over 150 shelters for animals. It will have X-ray equipment, laboratories, and clinical analysis capabilities.
The facility is being built in what used to be the municipal slaughterhouse. Construction should take about 10 months to complete.
More Than Just Medical Care
This isn't just a place to get your dog or cat treated. The hospital will have a dedicated area for responsible pet adoption.
Mayor Peralta emphasized that caring for street animals will be a priority. The city is also creating a new Municipal Institute for Animal Protection and Welfare to handle long-term animal care policies.
What This Means for Puerto Morelos Residents
Puerto Morelos residents currently have limited veterinary options locally. Most people travel to Playa del Carmen or Cancun for serious medical procedures or emergencies.
This new hospital could change that. While it's in Cancun, it's only about 30 minutes from Puerto Morelos. The expanded capacity and modern equipment means shorter wait times and better care options for our community's pets.
The facility also signals a regional commitment to animal welfare. Governor Mara Lezama's office supported the project, suggesting similar initiatives could come to other towns.
A Community-Driven Project
The idea came from Cancun's Participatory Budget program, where residents vote on spending priorities. Animal rescuers, foundations, and pet owners pushed for this facility.
This approach shows how local voices can shape public services. It's a model that could inspire similar projects in smaller communities like Puerto Morelos.
Looking Ahead
The hospital represents progress for the entire Riviera Maya region. Better animal care facilities mean healthier pets and stronger communities.
For Puerto Morelos pet owners, it's worth marking your calendar. Once the hospital opens later this year, it will be a valuable resource for your furry family members. |
