If you lived here during Hurricane Otis or watched recent storms like Hurricane Erick bring heavy rain to Mexico's coasts, you already know that rain can be more dangerous than the wind. Mexico is now doing something about that.
A New Warning System Is Coming This Hurricane Season
The National Meteorological Service (SMN) is launching a new "extraordinary rain" alert system starting with the 2026 hurricane season. It works like Mexico's existing earthquake alert system, sending a cell phone message directly to people in areas where extreme rainfall is forecast.
SMN chief Fabián Vázquez Romaña announced the program at a World Meteorological Organization meeting in Mexico City this week. He called 2026 a "trial year" but said the system is already a strong first version of what it will become.
The alerts will notify people in affected areas a few days before extreme rainfall is forecast, helping with precautions against flash flooding, landslides, and other rapid-onset dangers.
Why This Matters Specifically in Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos sits between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, right in the path of Atlantic storms that roll in off the Caribbean. The town floods quickly. Streets near the lagoon and lower-lying neighborhoods can fill with water fast, even from storms that never make direct landfall.
Flash flooding and mudslides, not wind, are often what cause the most damage and the most deaths during tropical weather events. An early warning gives residents time to move vehicles, protect homes, and make decisions about whether to stay or go.
Make Sure Your Phone Is Ready to Receive Alerts
The system will send alerts to any phone connected to a Mexican cellular tower, not just phones with Mexican numbers. But you have to make sure alerts are turned on.
Go to Settings, then Notifications, and scroll to the bottom of the page. Look for Government Alerts and make sure Emergency Alerts are switched on. This applies to both iPhone and Android devices.
What to Expect This Season
The 2026 Pacific hurricane season starts May 15. The Atlantic season starts June 1. Both run through November 30.
Colorado State University's team of experts estimate that 2026 will see 13 named storms develop in the Atlantic basin, including six hurricanes and two major hurricanes (defined as Category 3 or higher).
Meteorologists note that early warnings save lives, so stay prepared and get your phone set up before the season starts. |
