Puerto Morelos Is Getting Hit by Record Sargassum, But It's Fighting Back Better Than Its Neighbors

This summer's sargassum season is shaping up to be one of the worst on record for Quintana Roo, with officials projecting a record year for 2026. What makes this season especially brutal is the timing.

Sargassum began arriving on Quintana Roo beaches in January 2026, months earlier than the historical April-May window, demolishing the assumption that winter is the safe season.

The Hotel Numbers Tell the Story

Across Quintana Roo, the numbers are down. Hotel occupancy this summer is running between 55% and 70%, depending on the destination. In the hardest-hit spots, it is far worse. 

Quintana Roo Tourism Minister Bernardo Cueto Riestra said Tulum hotel occupancy had fallen to 15%, its lowest level on record, while Playa del Carmen stood at 30%.

Puerto Morelos is feeling it too. Hotel Association reports show occupancy at 56.6% for July 2026, compared with 70.7% in July 2025. By August 17, the month-to-date figure had slipped to 51.8%, compared with 64.7% for the same period last year.. 

For context, Cancún dropped 2.8% and the Isla Mujeres continental zone dropped 3.7% over the same stretch.

Why Puerto Morelos Still Has an Edge

Despite the drop, Puerto Morelos is in better shape than most of its neighbors, and the reef deserves much of the credit.

The Puerto Morelos reef lies just offshore and is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which is the second-largest reef system in the world. It intercepts and breaks up many sargassum mats before they reach the sand.

In moderate sargassum years, Puerto Morelos frequently holds light or clear conditions when its neighbors are logging heavy. In record years like 2025-2026, the protection is not complete, but heavy events are shorter in duration and recovery is faster than at open-coast beaches.

The municipality has also thrown serious resources at the problem. Puerto Morelos has deployed anti-sargassum barriers as part of its coastal protection strategy. Municipal and Navy crews are supporting beach cleanup operations in Puerto Morelos.

Crews removed thousands of tons of sargassum from Puerto Morelos beaches in the first months of 2026, with spring being the heaviest cleanup period.

More Than Just Seaweed

Sargassum is one of several factors affecting tourism demand. The hotel association also cited broader air-travel, security concerns, a strong peso, and overall economic conditions as additional pressures on tourism demand.

A New Idea: Turn the Problem Into a Product

The federal government is trying a different approach in Puerto Morelos. On July 27, Semarnat published the declaration of a Polo de Desarrollo de Economía Circular para el Bienestar in Puerto Morelos.

The project is intended to attract circular-economy investment, including possible future uses that could turn sargassum into useful products.

Whether that project changes the picture this season remains to be seen. For now, the reef, the barriers, and the cleanup crews are helping Puerto Morelos limit the impact, even as the town still faces heavy sargassum pressure. The season is not over yet, but the town is fighting back harder than most.
