Puerto Morelos Buries
a Letter to 2050

The 10-year-old municipality just sealed a time capsule filled with children's letters, handcrafted artifacts, and a message from the governor... and nobody gets to open it for 24 years.

Last Sunday, Puerto Morelos did something most towns never do. It packed up a piece of itself, sealed it tight, and told the future, "We'll see you in 2050."

A Town Young Enough to Remember Its Own Birthday

Puerto Morelos only became its own municipality on January 6, 2016. Before that, this town, along with Leona Vicario and Central Vallarta, was part of the much larger Benito Juárez municipality.

It took years of effort by local fishermen, founding families, and community members to earn the right to govern themselves. Ten years in, the town is already thinking 24 years ahead.

What's Inside the Capsule

Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu led the sealing ceremony on June 28, 2026, at Parque de los Fundadores.

The stainless steel capsule is built with a hermetic, anticorrosive system, and every document inside was placed in special conservation envelopes designed to last well past 2050.

The contents tell the story of Puerto Morelos today. Inside are letters written by local children, a letter from Governor Mara Lezama Espinoza, a message from the mayor, historical documents, current statistics, a map of the municipality, representative photographs, and handcrafted artisan pieces made by local craftsman Ermilio Noh Dzib.

The Kids Who Will Never Forget This

Eleven children from local schools had their letters selected for the capsule. Mayor Tziu presented recognition certificates to each of them during the ceremony.

The 2026 Children's Council president, Romina Solorio Espinoza, described the capsule as storing "a piece of the present so that the future can discover it."

Children were invited weeks earlier to submit handwritten letters describing how they imagined Puerto Morelos in 2050.

Letters had to be written in blue ink, on a single sheet, and delivered to the Maurilio Sánchez Jiménez Municipal Library in Puerto Morelos or the Pablo Pancardo Vargas Library in Leona Vicario.

Part of a Bigger Vision

The time capsule is more than a symbolic gesture. It connects directly to Puerto Morelos' long-term Vision 2050, a strategic roadmap aligned with Governor Mara Lezama's statewide sustainable development plan for Quintana Roo through 2050, developed with public participation.

The capsule and the plan share the same idea: the decisions made today will shape the town future generations inherit.

Waiting Until 2050

The capsule will remain sealed for 24 years. When it is opened, the children who wrote those letters will be in their thirties.

The Puerto Morelos they describe today, with its fishing docks, coral reef, quiet streets, and growing community, will have become part of history.

That is exactly the point.
