Puerto Morelos Braces for a Packed Holy Week
The crowds are coming, and Puerto Morelos is ready. State tourism officials are projecting over 1 million visitors across Quintana Roo during the Easter holidays, spanning Holy Week and Easter Sunday.
For a small town like Puerto Morelos, that means big energy and a few things worth knowing before you head out.
The Numbers Tell the Story
Puerto Morelos hotels are seeing strong pre-holiday bookings, in line with regional leaders' projections of over 95% occupancy across the Mexican Caribbean during Easter.
Nationally, Mexico's Tourism Ministry is forecasting 4.3 million visitors across the country's top destinations during this period.
Official projections put the Riviera Maya at 78.5% hotel occupancy overall. Regional bookings suggest even stronger demand during peak Easter dates.
What This Means for Puerto Morelos
Semana Santa (Holy Week) in 2026 runs from Sunday, March 29 (Palm Sunday) through Saturday, April 4 (Holy Saturday).
It concludes with Easter Sunday on April 5, 2026, which is the final day of the holiday period most travelers follow.
Holy Week is one of the busiest times of year here. The town square fills up, the beach gets crowded, and restaurants can have long waits. This is not the week to show up without a reservation.
If you have not already booked a table at your favorite spot, call ahead. Many local restaurants along the beach, Niños Heroes street, and near the town square fill up fast, especially on weekends and during the final days of the break.
Parking near the beach and the pier will also be tighter than usual. Walking, bicycle, or using a golf cart is a smarter move during peak hours.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of It
Early mornings are your best friend this week. The beach is quieter before 9 a.m., the snorkeling at the reef is calmer, and the breakfast restaurants should have open tables.
The Puerto Morelos Reef National Park sees more visitors during Holy Week, so if you are planning a dive or snorkel trip, book your tour operator in advance. Spots fill up quickly.
Also keep in mind that the Cancún-Chetumal highway, Federal Highway 307, sees heavy traffic during holiday periods. If you are driving in or out, early morning or late evening travel will save you time.
Enjoy It, But Plan Ahead
Holy Week in Puerto Morelos is genuinely fun. The town has a festive feel, the weather is usually beautiful, and the energy is contagious.
A little planning goes a long way toward making sure you enjoy it rather than spending the week stuck in a line. |
