Canadian snowbirds have been quietly abandoning their traditional winter spots. Canadian travel to the United States declined 24% overall in the first half of 2025, including sharp drops in cities like Las Vegas, New York, and Honolulu, prompting many to shift toward Mexico. Crowded beaches, a weaker Canadian dollar, and rising costs in Florida and Arizona are pushing people to look elsewhere.

Mexico's Caribbean coast has become the top alternative. Passenger volumes on the Toronto–Cancún route increased 26.1% compared to 2024, while the Montreal–Cancún route saw a 24% surge, and overall Canadian arrivals to Mexico were up 11.4% between January and October 2025. That momentum has carried right into 2026.

Why Puerto Morelos Specifically

Puerto Morelos has something the bigger resort towns don't: it still feels like a real place. Sitting just 20 minutes south of Cancún International Airport, there are no giant resort towers dominating the skyline and no party crowds spilling onto the beach.
