Puerto Morelos is advancing circular economy efforts through a program processing hotel organic waste into agricultural inputs, in partnership with El Cid Resorts.

What Is the Program and Why Does It Matter?

The Puerto Morelos organic waste program provides producers with municipal access cards to hotel residues, supporting local agriculture without specified tax incentives.

What's In It for Businesses?

The Puerto Morelos organic waste program provides producers with municipal access cards to hotel residues, supporting local agriculture without specified tax incentives. For a region that has struggled to attract serious industrial investment, these are significant numbers.

The Science Already Works

Before anyone gets too excited, it is worth knowing this is not just a theory. Puerto Morelos is expanding a program delivering up to 2.5 tons of daily hotel organic waste to local producers and Crococun zoo for agricultural use, achieving 90% utilization in its first stage.

The One Big Challenge Still Unsolved

Collecting sargassum off the beach is likely the most expensive part of the whole process. That cost question still needs to be worked out before large private investors fully commit.

There is a silver lining though. Beach collection also prevents sargassum from rotting and releasing pollutants. That environmental benefit can be measured, certified, and sold as carbon credits on international markets, which could help offset collection costs.

What This Means for Puerto Morelos

Our town has dealt with sargassum season every year. The idea that local crews collecting seaweed could feed an industrial facility right here, while generating clean energy and carbon credits, is a genuine shift in how the problem gets handled.
