Every September, just as the Mexican flags start waving across Puerto Morelos, something delicious shows up on local tables — Chiles en Nogada.

This famous dish is more than food, it’s a patriotic symbol. It was created in Puebla almost 200 years ago to honor Mexico’s Independence.

The dish tells a story with its colors: green chili, white walnut sauce, and bright red pomegranate seeds. Together they represent the Mexican flag.

Here in Puerto Morelos, you don’t need to travel far to taste it. Several of our favorite restaurants in town serve it every year during the fiestas patrias.

But you’ll need to catch it fast, since it’s only on the menu for a short time.

El Campanario is one of the classic spots where you’ll find a hearty, traditional version. Their chiles are generously filled and topped with a smooth nogada sauce that locals rave about.

If you want something a bit more laid-back, try El Pirata, a seafood place that also goes big for Mexico’s national dish in September. Their chiles keep the tradition alive while adding that cozy Puerto Morelos vibe.

Perla Negra is another must-visit. Known for its friendly atmosphere, it surprises diners with a rich and balanced Chiles en Nogada that brings comfort with every bite.

And don’t miss Lola y Moya, a family-centered local favorite. Here, the dish feels especially home-cooked, with just the right mix of sweet and savory that recalls old family recipes.

Chiles en Nogada is more than just a plate of food. It’s a taste of history, tradition, and pride.

This September, if you’re in Puerto Morelos, treat yourself. Order it. Celebrate Mexico.

And make sure to snap a picture before diving in. Independence Day only comes once a year — and so does this dish.
