The holiday season in our region always brings unique traditions, and our neighbor city of Cancun has cooked up a truly giant one.
Get ready, because the Monumental Burrito Sabanero, a massive Christmas decoration, is set to return for 2025.
This cheerful brightly colored little burro has quickly become a beloved symbol of Christmas in the Mexican Caribbean.
Cancun's Beloved Giant Burrito
Cancun’s Municipal President, Ana Paty Peralta, has confirmed its return in 2025, making it the fourth year for this fun tradition. The official inauguration date still to be announced
The giant burrito first appeared in 2022, placed at the Glorieta Monumento a la Historia de México near the ADO bus terminal.
It quickly became a social media sensation, with many people sharing photos of the unique sight.
However, its first spot was a bit tricky due to heavy traffic, making it hard for everyone to enjoy safely.
In 2023, the burrito moved to MalecĂłn Tajamar, a more open area. But nature had other plans, and strong winds unfortunately knocked it over during its stay.
This event only added to its story, making it even more memorable for locals.
Last year, in 2024, the burrito found its perfect home at Plaza de la Reforma, right in front of the City Hall.
A strong, reinforced concrete base was added to keep it stable, ensuring it could stand tall throughout the entire Christmas season.
This location proved to be a big hit, drawing thousands of residents and visitors for photos and festive moments.
A New Regional Tradition
The inauguration of the giant burrito has become a real celebration for the people of Cancun. It’s now seen as an official part of the Christmas festivities in our beautiful Mexican Caribbean.
This tradition is special not just for its huge size, but for the joy and community spirit it represents.
For those of us in Puerto Morelos, a trip to Cancun to see the giant burrito can be a fun day out.
It’s a unique way to experience the holiday spirit in a neighboring city. You can combine it with a visit to some of Cancun’s other attractions, making for a memorable family outing.
As the holiday season approaches, the return of the Monumental Burrito Sabanero is something many are looking forward to.
It’s a wonderful example of how our region embraces creativity and cheer during Christmas. Make sure to keep an eye out for its official inauguration date in 2025. |
