Planning a day trip from Puerto Morelos to Mexico’s ancient ruins? You will want to adjust your budget for 2026.
New federal rules mean higher entry fees for many popular archaeological sites, especially for international visitors.
This change could affect your plans to visit places like Tulum or Chichen Itza — which is confirmed to fall into Category 1 (the highest fee tier) and therefore subject to the largest increase.
Cobá is likely to be impacted too, though its official category under the reform has not yet been publicly confirmed.
New Fees on the Horizon
Starting January 1, 2026, the cost to enter major archaeological sites will increase. This is part of a new Federal Rights Law, pending final Senate approval (so final outcome could vary).
The biggest jump is for foreign tourists.
For international visitors, the fee for places like Tulum and Cobá will roughly double. It will go from about 100 pesos, approximately $5 USD, to 209 pesos, which is approximately $11.50 USD.
This is a significant change for travelers.
Mexican nationals and legal residents will see a much smaller increase. Their entry fee will go from 100 pesos to just 105 pesos. This difference means locals will still enjoy these sites at a very low cost.
Nationwide Adjustments
These fee hikes are not just for Tulum, Chichen Itza, and Cobá. They are part of a wider plan by the National Institute of Anthropology and History, INAH.
This plan adjusts prices for museums and archaeological sites across the country. The most popular sites, called “Category 1,” will see the largest increases.
This includes famous spots like Palenque in Chiapas, Calakmul in Campeche, and Uxmal outside of Merida.
Closer to Puerto Morelos, the Cancun Mayan Museum will also see its fees rise by nearly 100%. So, if you are planning a visit there, expect to pay more.
What This Means for Your Trips
For families visiting from Puerto Morelos, these new prices can add up quickly.
A family of four visiting just two top-tier ruins in 2026 could spend close to $100 USD on entry fees alone. This is more than double what it cost in previous years. It is important to factor this into your travel budget.
The government says these extra funds will help maintain and preserve Mexico’s incredible archaeological heritage.
This is a vital effort to protect these ancient wonders for future generations. However, some worry that higher prices might make these sites less accessible for some travelers.
Planning Your Adventure
While the prices are going up, the experience of exploring these ancient sites remains priceless.
Standing among the limestone temples of Tulum or climbing the pyramids of Cobá is truly unforgettable. It is a chance to connect with a rich history.
For those living in or visiting Puerto Morelos, planning ahead is key. Check the latest fees before you go.
Also remember, there are many other amazing things to see and do in our region that will not be affected by these specific changes.
The increase applies only to museums / archaeological zones under INAH, not necessarily all tourist attractions. |
