Big changes are coming for foreigners living in Mexico, especially here in our beautiful Puerto Morelos.

The Mexican government plans to double the cost of temporary and permanent residency visas starting in 2026. This significant increase is part of the new national budget.

Visa Costs Set to Double

The proposed 2026 federal budget, submitted to Congress on September 8, includes a 100% increase in visa fees. This means that if you are planning to apply for or renew your residency, the price will be much higher.

The government claims this increase is needed to make sure everyone contributes fairly to the country's resources.

For temporary permits, the cost will jump as follows (USD in parens)...

Temporary Residency Visa Increases:
1-year: 5,328 MXN ($290) → 10,656 MXN ($580)
2-year: 7,984 MXN ($435) → 15,968 MXN ($870)
3-year: 10,112 MXN ($550) → 20,224 MXN ($1,100)
4-year: 11,984 MXN ($650) → 23,968 MXN ($1,300)

Permanent Residency Visa Increase:
6,494 MXN ($355) → 12,988 MXN ($705)

Note: Fees are set in pesos in the Federal Fees Law. USD amounts above are approximate and may vary with exchange rates.

If approved by Congress, the new prices would take effect in 2026. Given the current majority, passage is likely, but not final yet.

Why the Increase?

Mexico’s Finance and Public Credit Ministry explained the reason for these changes. They noted that many foreigners, including digital nomads, have moved to Mexico. This has brought changes to housing, restaurants, local shops, and community spaces.

While this growth boosts the economy, it also requires more from the country's infrastructure and services. The new fees are meant to help cover these costs.

Finance Minister Édgar Amador mentioned a detailed discussion with the National Migration Institute about digital nomads.

Impact on Our Community

This change will affect many people in Puerto Morelos and the Yucatan. Our region is a popular spot for foreigners and digital nomads. The increased cost of living here is a topic many locals and expats discuss.

If you plan to apply from Puerto Morelos, most residents go through the INM office in CancĂşn. Expect heavier demand early 2026.

Book consulate appointments abroad early and keep receipts for any fee changes.

The government's proposal notes that a 50% discount might be available for some residency applicants. This would be under certain conditions, following the Migration Law Regulations. It is important to stay informed about these details.

We will keep an eye on the budget approval process and any further updates. For now, if you are considering residency in Mexico, be prepared for these upcoming fee changes in 2026.
