The 2026 FIFA World Cup is coming to Mexico, and the country is marking the moment with something you can hold in your hand.
Mexico's Senate has approved three special commemorative coins, including the country's first-ever 25-peso coin, made from pure gold.
Three Coins, One Big Celebration
The Mexican Senate voted 94 to 0 in favor of creating three new coins. The first is a pure gold 25-peso coin, which has never existed before in Mexican currency. The second is a pure silver 10-peso coin. The third is a bimetallic 20-peso coin, meaning it is made from two different metals.
All three coins share the same basic design. The front features the National Coat of Arms in sculptural relief, with "Estados Unidos Mexicanos" arched above it. The back will carry artwork tied to the 2026 World Cup.
Why This Matters for Mexico
This is not just about soccer. Mexico will host the FIFA World Cup for the third time—after 1970 and 1986—sharing duties with the United States and Canada, an unprecedented tri-nation event.
Mexico will host 13 matches across three cities, Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara. The opening match kicks off June 11 at Estadio Azteca (also referred to as Estadio Banorte in some contexts), in Mexico City.
Where to Get One
Once the official decree is published in Mexico's Official Gazette, the coins will go on sale. You can buy them at authorized banks, the Casa de Moneda de Mexico (the Mexican Mint), and select official shops.
No word yet on exact pricing beyond face value, but gold and silver commemorative coins like these typically sell well above their face value as collector's items.
A Note for Collectors in the Riviera Maya
For collectors and soccer fans here in Puerto Morelos and along the Riviera Maya, these coins could be worth tracking down. HSBC and Banorte both have branches nearby in Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and those are the types of institutions expected to carry them.
Keep an eye on the Diario Oficial de la Federacion for the official release date. Once that decree drops, the coins will not last long on shelves.
Whether you are a coin collector, a futbol fanatic, or just someone who appreciates a piece of history, this is one souvenir from the 2026 World Cup worth having. |
