Puerto Morelos Power Grid Gets $107M Upgrade to Stop Outages |
The Federal Electricity Commission has activated a massive new substation in the municipality, and the timing could not be more critical for residents heading into peak summer demand season. |

If your air conditioner has been cutting out during the hottest part of the afternoon, there is finally some good news.
Puerto Morelos is now the home of the most important piece of electrical infrastructure built in the region in years.
What Just Happened
The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has officially activated the new Leona Vicario electrical substation, located right here in Puerto Morelos.
The project cost 2.156 billion pesos, which CFE says was invested in the new substation and related transmission infrastructure. CFE says the project is part of its broader plan to strengthen and expand Mexico's national electric system.
The substation is linked to new transmission infrastructure that CFE says will help reinforce the regional grid. CFE says the new infrastructure will improve service for hundreds of thousands of users across northern Quintana Roo.
Why This Was Urgently Needed
Residents in the region have reported frequent outages during periods of high demand. As temperatures have risen during the hot season, the local grid has been pushed past its limits.
Air conditioning use has surged across the region, and the existing infrastructure simply was not built for today's population and tourism levels.
Residents in Cancún have protested outages after extended periods without electricity. Some residents in Bacalar reportedly threatened to withhold CFE bill payments in protest over outages.
Playa del Carmen has also experienced power disruptions during periods of high demand. Parts of the Yucatán Peninsula have experienced pressure on the electrical grid.
Part of a Bigger Push
The Leona Vicario substation is not CFE's only recent move in the region. CFE also recently activated another substation in Cancún, Bonampak. CFE also added equipment at the Balam substation in Cancún to help stabilize voltage during peak demand.
Taken together, these projects are intended to improve grid reliability during periods of high demand.
What It Means for Puerto Morelos
The substation sits in our municipality, which means Puerto Morelos is now a critical node in the regional power network. That places Puerto Morelos in a more central position within the regional power network.
Local authorities have said they have sought grid improvements in the area, including in the Leona Vicario delegation.
CFE activated the substation ahead of the summer demand season. July and August are typically among the hottest months of the year, when electricity demand often rises, and the goal was to be ready before that window arrives.
The Bottom Line
A $107 million substation does not solve every problem overnight. The grid across Quintana Roo has years of under-investment to overcome, and demand keeps growing.
But the new infrastructure may help improve reliability during peak summer demand, and Puerto Morelos is at the center of it. |
