Puerto Morelos Is Getting Ready for Sargassum Season, and This Year Looks Serious

The seaweed is coming. Officials in Puerto Morelos are not waiting around to find out how bad it will be.

Forecasts predict a heavy sargassum season in 2026, and Puerto Morelos is aligning with ongoing regional preparations to protect its 20 kilometers of coastline.

A Team Effort From the Start

Officials in Puerto Morelos are coordinating with the Mexican Navy, hotels, and environmental agencies on sargassum containment efforts for 2026, building on state-wide barrier installations already underway in the area.

Mayor Tziu Muñoz made her position clear. "The key to tackling sargassum is the unity of all those involved," she said. "If we work together, we can minimize the impact of this macroalga on our beaches and on tourism, which is the economic engine of our municipality."

The Barrier Strategy

The plan centers on a coordinated anti-sargassum barrier system placed roughly 150 meters from the shore. That distance is intentional. It allows crews to collect the sargassum while it is still in shallow water, making removal faster and preventing it from decomposing on the beach.

Hotels are expected to align their own barriers with the municipal system. The municipality will continue cleaning public beaches, but the mayor was direct about expectations for the private sector. Each hotel needs to do its part.

The Navy Is Bringing Serious Equipment

The Mexican Navy is supporting regional sargassum efforts, including barrier installations off Puerto Morelos, with intensified beach cleaning operations starting in March using state-hired brigades and equipment.

An amphibious vehicle will also be used to move collected sargassum from the water to land quickly. Speed matters here. The faster it comes out of the water, the less it decomposes and releases the hydrogen sulfide smell that drives tourists away.

Where Does It All Go?

Collected sargassum is directed to processing facilities, including a new 38-hectare industrial park in Puerto Morelos for conversion into products, with efforts coordinated to protect nearby reefs.

The Puerto Morelos Reef National Park sits just offshore, and protecting it is part of the equation.

What This Means for Residents and Visitors

Early coordination like this makes a real difference. Locals who have been here through bad sargassum years know that a slow response means weeks of smelly, unusable beaches. The fact that all the key players are already at the table in March is a good sign for the season ahead.
