Puerto Morelos Is Spending Big on Safety in 2026
The town of Puerto Morelos is getting a serious security upgrade this year. The City Council has approved more than 43 million pesos to strengthen public safety across the municipality.
New Patrol Cars, Cameras, and a New Base
A big chunk of that budget is going toward expanding the police vehicle fleet. The department recently added 15 new patrol units, and more are on the way.
The money will also fund a major expansion of video surveillance. The goal is to reach around 200 security cameras placed in strategic locations throughout the municipality, including along la ruta de los cenotes.
A new citizen security base is also in the works. It will be funded through a state trust and is expected to expand the operational reach of local police. Details on the exact location will be announced soon.
Drones Are Already in the Air
Last month, Puerto Morelos added two high-tech drones to its security operations. The aerial equipment gives police a major advantage when it comes to monitoring hard-to-reach areas and responding quickly to incidents.
The drones were delivered personally by Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz, who also handed out certificates to 29 newly certified police officers at the same event.
The Force Is Growing
Puerto Morelos now has 76 active police officers on duty. That number has grown steadily as the municipality works to keep pace with the area's rapid population and tourism growth.
The new surveillance system will not only serve the Municipal Police. Civil Protection and the Fire Department will also have access, which means faster and better-coordinated emergency responses across the board.
What This Means for Residents and Visitors
For anyone living in or visiting Puerto Morelos, this is good news. The town has long had a reputation as one of the calmer, safer spots along the Riviera Maya. These investments are designed to keep it that way.
More cameras, more officers, more drones, and a new security base all point to a local government that is taking public safety seriously. Whether you live here full time, part time, or are just passing through, a stronger security presence benefits everyone.
The 43 million peso investment is one of the largest public safety commitments Puerto Morelos has made in recent memory, and the results are already starting to show up on the streets. |
